German bank statement translation for a student visa, an immigrant visa sponsor file, a US loan or a court. We translate each Kontoauszug from a Sparkasse, a Volksbank or an online bank, and Austrian and Swiss statements, with every booking line and balance carried over and a signed certification.
A German statement is a list of bookings with short coded text, and the numbers are written the European way.
Buchungstag, Wertstellung and the balance
Each line has a Buchungstag, the day the bank booked it, and a Wertstellung or Valuta, the day it counts for interest, so one transfer can show two dates. The opening balance is the alter Kontostand and the closing one the neuer Kontostand. Some banks mark debits and credits S and H, for Soll and Haben, others use a minus sign. We label both dates and keep the debit or credit clear on every line.
Booking types
The text column names the kind of booking: Überweisung for a transfer, Gutschrift for money in, Lastschrift for a direct debit, Dauerauftrag for a standing order, Kartenzahlung or girocard for a card payment, Bargeldauszahlung for a cash withdrawal, Entgelt or Kontoführungsgebühr for fees. Payee names, IBANs and reference text stay as written, since a visa officer may compare them with your other documents.
Amounts, currencies and Swiss formats
A German statement writes 1.250,00 EUR, with a point for thousands and a comma for decimals. A Swiss statement writes CHF 1'250.00 with an apostrophe. We keep each amount in the original currency and format it so a US reader cannot mistake 1.250 for one and a quarter. We do not convert euros or francs to dollars; the consulate or bank does that at its own rate.
Who is asking for your German bank statement translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS and the National Visa Center
Affidavit of support and consular processing cases take bank statements with a complete English translation and a signed certification. No notarization is needed.
UKVI asks for a certified translation of any document not in English, with the translator's details and the date on it. Statements for the maintenance requirement are the usual request.
A mortgage lender or a landlord checking income accepts a certified translation of your statements. Digital delivery as a PDF is usually enough; ask for a hard copy if they want one.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a German bank statement.
01
Download the statement rather than photographing it
A PDF from online banking is sharper than a photo and keeps every figure legible. If you only have paper, scan each page flat with the header and the closing balance in frame.
02
Send a complete period
A consulate or a lender names the months it wants. Send every page of each month, including pages with no transactions, so the running balance reads without gaps.
03
Tell us whose account it is
Give us the account holder's name as the passport spells it. Account numbers, amounts and the currency are copied exactly as printed; the headings and descriptions are translated.
Details and pricing
What is included in a German bank statement translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the bank statement is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
Yes. Most German banks issue Kontoauszüge as PDFs in the Postfach of the online banking, and a clear PDF is the best source. If a consulate wants a statement stamped by the bank, ask your branch for a signed copy first and send us that, so the stamp is translated as well.
How many months of statements do I need?
That is set by whoever asked, not by us. A US university issuing an I-20 or a consulate usually names the period on its own checklist. Each page of up to 250 words is $25, and a busy current account can run several pages a month, so check the request before scanning a full year.
Do you translate a Sparbuch or a Depotauszug?
Yes. A Sparbuch, the savings passbook still common with older account holders, has handwritten or printed entries we translate line by line. A Depotauszug lists securities with their ISIN, quantity and Kurswert, the market value on the date shown. Both are often used as proof of funds next to the current account statement.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
