Pix, cheque especial and other lines on a Brazilian extrato

A Brazilian statement is full of payment instruments that do not exist in the US. The translation has to name them without touching a figure.

Pix, TED, boleto and débito automático

Most lines on a current statement are Pix transfers, instant payments labeled Pix enviado or Pix recebido with the other party's name and often a masked CPF or CNPJ. Older transfers show as TED or DOC. Pagamento de boleto is a bar-coded bill, how Brazilians pay rent, tuition and utilities, and débito automático is a direct debit. A visa officer or an underwriter sees Pix and cannot tell whether the money came in or went out, so each description is translated with its direction and the other party, and the bank's own abbreviations such as DEB, CRED and TAR are written out.

Cheque especial, the balance lines and the comma

Many statements print a limite de cheque especial, an overdraft line, next to the balance, and some apps show saldo disponível as the balance plus that limit. A reader who does not know this takes the overdraft for savings. We label it as overdraft credit and translate saldo anterior, saldo do dia and saldo bloqueado so the balance that is really the customer's is clear. Amounts stay exactly as printed, R$ 12.500,00, and a translator's note says once that Brazilian statements use a point for thousands and a comma for decimals.

Agência, conta, operação and the poupança

The header gives the agência number, the conta with its dígito verificador after a hyphen, and the holder's CPF; a Caixa account adds an operação code, 001 for a conta corrente and 013 for a poupança. A poupança statement shows a monthly rendimento credited on the account's aniversário, the day of the month it was opened, and FGTS and Caixa Tem statements have their own layouts. We keep every number as it appears and translate the labels, because a university or a lender matches the account numbers on the statement to the ones on the sponsor's letter.

Who is asking for your Portuguese (Brazil) bank statement translation?

The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.

USCIS and the National Visa Center

Affidavit of support and consular processing cases take bank statements with a complete English translation and a signed certification. No notarization is needed.

USCIS translation requirements

UK Visas and Immigration

UKVI asks for a certified translation of any document not in English, with the translator's details and the date on it. Statements for the maintenance requirement are the usual request.

Lenders and landlords

A mortgage lender or a landlord checking income accepts a certified translation of your statements. Digital delivery as a PDF is usually enough; ask for a hard copy if they want one.

Certified translations

Before you upload

Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Portuguese (Brazil) bank statement.

01

Download the statement rather than photographing it

A PDF from online banking is sharper than a photo and keeps every figure legible. If you only have paper, scan each page flat with the header and the closing balance in frame.

02

Send a complete period

A consulate or a lender names the months it wants. Send every page of each month, including pages with no transactions, so the running balance reads without gaps.

03

Tell us whose account it is

Give us the account holder's name as the passport spells it. Account numbers, amounts and the currency are copied exactly as printed; the headings and descriptions are translated.

Portuguese (Brazil) Bank Statement FAQ

Most questions about pricing and turnaround can be answered faster by requesting a quote.

Request a Quote

Which statements does a US university want from a sponsor in Brazil?
Most want recent months of the account that will pay, in the student's or the sponsor's name, and a consular officer at the visa interview may ask to see the same pages. Send the extrato for each account and, when a parent is the sponsor, their Informe de Rendimentos or a carta do gerente stating the balance. A page is up to 250 words, and a monthly app statement usually runs one to three pages.
Can you translate a statement printed from the app, or does it need a bank stamp?
An app PDF carries the bank's name, the agência and conta and the period, and that is what US recipients normally accept. Some ask for an extrato with the branch stamp or a declaração de saldo signed by the gerente, and Brazilian banks issue both on request. We translate either, including the stamp text, the signature block and any authentication code printed at the foot of the page.
My sponsor's money is in a CDB or Tesouro Direto, not the checking account. Does that count?
Whether it counts is the school's or the consulate's call, but they can only judge it in English. A Brazilian extrato de investimentos lists each CDB, LCI, LCA or Tesouro Selic holding with its vencimento and whether it has liquidez diária, meaning it can be drawn at any time. We translate those columns, because a reader needs to know which funds are reachable now.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
