What a Haitian death record proves, and what it leaves out

An acte de décès records that a death was declared, not a medical finding, and a US insurer or court needs to know the difference before it asks for more.

A declaration, not a cause of death

The acte names the person who declared the death, often a son or a neighbour, with two witnesses, then gives the date and hour of death, the place as a commune or hospital, and the deceased's age, profession, parents and spouse. It does not give a cause of death. We translate the narrative as it stands and do not add a cause line the original never had. An insurer that needs the cause gets it from the doctor's certificat de décès or the hospital's constat, which is a separate paper we translate alongside the acte.

Recent deaths: no extrait yet, so funeral papers instead

The Archives Nationales cannot issue an extrait de décès until the register reaches them, which takes about a year, and a US consulate will accept funeral home papers in the meantime. So a fresh file holds the officier's copy of the acte, the pompes funèbres invoice or attestation, the burial permit and the church's record of the funeral. The funeral programme and the pastor's letter are usually in Creole, with the French acte beside them, and we translate both languages on one order.

A death in the US, sent back to Haiti

The reverse case is common: a Haitian dies in Florida or New York and the family needs the US death certificate in French. The consulate asks for it before it issues the papers to ship the body home, and the tribunal civil, the notaire and the bank in Haiti ask for it to open the succession and release land or an account. We translate the state death certificate with its cause of death, the medical examiner's entries and the funeral director's details, and notarize it when the consulate wants that.

Who is asking for your Haitian Creole death certificate translation?

The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.

USCIS

USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.

USCIS translation requirements

Insurers and Social Security

Life insurance and survivor benefit claims accept a certified translation. Add the medical certificate if the claim turns on the cause of death.

Courts and consulates abroad

A probate court or a consulate handling a repatriation or an estate usually wants the original apostilled and the translation certified or notarized.

Apostille service

Before you upload

Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Haitian Creole death certificate.

01

Send the civil record, not only the medical form

The registry act is the document recipients ask for. Add the doctor's certificate as a second file if an insurer or a court wants the cause of death.

02

Include the reverse and the stamps

Issue stamps, the registrar's signature and folio numbers often sit on the back or at the edge. Photograph both sides flat with the whole page in frame.

03

Give us the names as they appear elsewhere

Tell us the English spelling of the deceased and of the spouse or parents named on the record, so the translation matches the petition, policy or probate file it joins.

Most questions about pricing and turnaround can be answered faster by requesting a quote.

Request a Quote

Is the hospital's certificat de décès enough for USCIS, or do I need the acte?
USCIS wants the civil record, the acte de décès or the extrait, because that is the document the Haitian state recognizes. The certificat de décès is a doctor's statement. If the civil record is still being drawn up, file the translated certificat and the funeral papers with a note that the extrait will follow, then send the extrait when it arrives. Each document is translated and certified separately.
My father died in the 2010 earthquake and no death was ever registered. What can be translated?
Many January 2010 deaths were never declared. Families use a jugement déclaratif de décès from the tribunal civil, or sworn statements from witnesses taken before a notaire or a juge de paix, and the recipient decides whether that is enough. We translate the judgment in full, with the names of the judge and the witnesses, and each affidavit, whether it was written in French or Creole.
Will a US life insurer or Social Security accept a translated extrait de décès?
Both accept foreign death records with a certified English translation. Social Security uses it to start survivor benefits for a widow or a child, and an insurer uses it to pay a policy. The translation describes the extrait's stamp, hologram and dry seal in their places so the claims examiner can match the English to the original, and we can add a notarized copy if the insurer's form asks for one.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
