Ukrainian death certificate translation to English for a widow's petition, Social Security survivor benefits, a life insurance claim or probate, and from English into Ukrainian for an inheritance opened in Ukraine. We translate the свідоцтво про смерть from any ДРАЦС office, Soviet-era certificates in Russian, and the court rulings that stand in for a certificate in wartime.
The Ukrainian certificate records that a death was registered. The cause of death is on a different form, and a US claims examiner usually wants both.
No cause of death on the certificate
The свідоцтво про смерть gives the full name with patronymic, the date and place of death, the date of birth, citizenship, the актовий запис number and the ДРАЦС office that registered it. It does not say how the person died. That is on the лікарське свідоцтво про смерть, form 106/о, which the hospital or a forensic bureau writes before the death can be registered. A life insurer or a workers' compensation claim asks for the cause, so send the 106/о with the certificate and we translate its medical wording, Latin diagnosis lines included, as a second page.
Court rulings instead of a certificate
A death in occupied territory, or one the family could not register the usual way, is established by a Ukrainian court under Article 317 of the Civil Procedure Code, and a ДРАЦС office then registers it on the ruling. A soldier missing in action is first безвісно відсутній and later оголошений померлим by a court, and the certificate carries the date the court set. On its own that certificate leaves a US reader puzzled by a death date long after the last contact, so we translate the ruling with it and keep the court, the case number and the date the ruling took effect.
Two dates, and the six-month clock
Every certificate shows the date of death and the date of registration, and in wartime they can be months apart. The SSA and a bank read the first. So does a Ukrainian notary, who counts the six months for accepting an inheritance from the death, not from the paper. The translation labels both dates exactly as the form does. If the paper certificate stayed behind, a register extract about the death from any ДРАЦС office carries the same актовий запис number, and we translate it under its own title so nobody takes it for the certificate.
Who is asking for your Ukrainian death certificate translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Ukrainian death certificate.
01
Send the civil record, not only the medical form
The registry act is the document recipients ask for. Add the doctor's certificate as a second file if an insurer or a court wants the cause of death.
02
Include the reverse and the stamps
Issue stamps, the registrar's signature and folio numbers often sit on the back or at the edge. Photograph both sides flat with the whole page in frame.
03
Give us the names as they appear elsewhere
Tell us the English spelling of the deceased and of the spouse or parents named on the record, so the translation matches the petition, policy or probate file it joins.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Ukrainian death certificate translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the death certificate is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
My father died in Ukraine and I need the certificate for Social Security survivor benefits. What do I send?
Send the свідоцтво про смерть, the back too if it carries a stamp, and your own birth certificate if the SSA needs to see the relationship. The translation keeps the patronymic, so your father's name on the death certificate matches his name as your father on your birth record. If the SSA or an insurer asks for the cause of death, add the medical certificate from the hospital and we translate it as a second page.
Can you translate a US death certificate into Ukrainian for an inheritance in Ukraine?
Yes. A Ukrainian notary opening a спадкова справа for property in Ukraine wants the US death certificate with an apostille from the state that issued it and a Ukrainian translation. The notary certifies the translator's signature on the translation, which happens in Ukraine or at a Ukrainian consulate, so our Ukrainian version serves the family, the lawyer and the consulate. Ask the notary what form they will take before you order.
The person died abroad. Which certificate do you translate?
The certificate of the country where the death happened is the primary record, and we translate it from that language. A Ukrainian consulate can register the death as well and issue a Ukrainian свідоцтво, which is what closes a Ukrainian pension or a bank account, and the two certificates may spell the name differently. Send both and we translate them in one order so the spellings are reconciled in a note.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
