Korean passport translation for USCIS, a US court, a bank or an employer who wants every page in English, and the reverse: a US passport translated into Korean for a Korean office. The 대한민국 여권 data page already prints English, so what needs translating is the rest of the book and the Hangul the English leaves out.
A recipient who asks for a translated passport usually wants a full record of the book, and most of that is stamps, visas and notes.
Old green book, new blue book
Passports issued before 21 December 2021 are the green 전자여권 with the 주민등록번호 printed on the data page. The 차세대 전자여권 issued since then has a dark blue cover, a plastic data page and no resident registration number. Both carry the holder's name in Hangul and in the Roman spelling the 외교부 recorded at first issue, and we copy that spelling exactly, since the Korean rules make it hard to change later.
Stamps, visas and the back pages
Older books carry entry and exit stamps from 인천 or 김해 with the date as 2009.03.14 and the port in Korean; newer ones often have none, because travelers who use the 자동출입국심사 gates are not stamped. Korean visas issued to a foreigner list the 체류자격 code, such as F-4 or E-2, and the 체류기간. The last pages carry the 여권 사용 안내 and the holder's emergency contact in Korean. We translate every page that has writing on it and mark the blank ones as blank, so the translation accounts for the whole book.
Types and numbers
The book type is printed on the data page: 일반여권 for ordinary, 관용여권 for official and 외교관여권 for diplomatic travel. Ordinary numbers begin with M, and the next-generation series puts a letter in the middle of a nine-character number, so a reader who expects digits only may copy it wrong. A 단수여권 is valid for one trip and one year; a 복수여권 for up to ten years. The 발행관청 line reads 외교부, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, even when the book was applied for at a 구청 or a consulate, and the translation says so.
Who is asking for your Korean passport translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
A foreign passport used as proof of identity is accepted with a certified translation of the data page. Digital delivery as a PDF is usually enough; ask for a hard copy if they want one.
A US passport sent abroad for a marriage, a residency permit or a property purchase often needs the translation notarized. Tell us the country in your order notes.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Korean passport.
01
Send the data page and any page with a stamp
The photo page carries the name, number and dates. Visa pages, entry stamps and an amendment page matter too when the recipient is tracing travel history, so include them if the checklist asks.
02
Give us the spelling you use in English
The translation keeps the name as the passport prints it and notes the romanized spelling you use elsewhere. Say which at checkout so the recipient can match the two.
03
Scan it flat with the machine-readable lines in frame
The two lines of characters at the foot of the photo page are copied exactly as printed. A crooked or cropped photo hides them and slows the translator down.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Korean passport translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the passport is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
USCIS asked for a translation of my passport. The data page is already in English. Why?
The data page has English headings, but the officer is often asking about the rest: the stamps that show your trips, the 사증 page from a Korean visa, a note about a name change. A certified translation of the full book, with the English data page copied as printed, answers the request. If the officer only wants the data page, we translate that single page at $25.
My name on my passport is spelled differently from my diploma. Which spelling do you use?
The passport spelling. The 외교부 fixes the Roman name at first issue and lets you change it only in narrow cases, so the passport spelling is the one US agencies treat as yours. On the diploma or the 기본증명서 we write the name as the passport does and keep the Hangul beside it, and we add a translator's note when the source document spells it another way.
I have an expired green passport and a new blue one. Do both need translating?
Only what the recipient asks for. The expired book holds the visas and stamps from the years it covered, which is often what USCIS or a court wants to see, and the new book adds nothing for trips before it was issued. Send both with the request letter and we will translate the pages it names.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
