Punjabi driver's license translation into certified English for a DMV, an insurer or an employer. We translate the handwritten booklet licenses issued in Indian Punjab, the newer card licenses, and the renewal and endorsement pages that show how long you have been driving.
Punjab has issued two kinds of license, and what needs translating differs between them.
The old booklet
Older licenses are small booklets from the licensing authority, printed in Punjabi and English, with the entries written by hand in Gurmukhi. Renewal stamps, extra vehicle classes and changes of address were added on later pages over the years. Those pages are where a first issue date from the 1990s shows up, and they are the ones an insurer wants to see. We translate every page, stamps included.
Class codes
Both versions list vehicle classes as codes: MCWG for a motorcycle with gears, LMV for a car or jeep, LMV-NT for non-transport use, TRANS for a commercial vehicle, with a separate validity date for each. The translation keeps the code and writes out what it covers. A US reader cannot otherwise tell whether you held a car license or only a motorcycle one.
What US and Canadian offices do with it
Most US states will not exchange an Indian license, so you take the written and road tests. The translation earns its keep with insurers, who may rate a driver with years of history differently from a new one, and with trucking and delivery employers checking experience. In Ontario, a Punjab license can count toward driving experience in the graduated licensing system.
Who is asking for your Punjabi driver's license translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
State DMVs
Most DMV offices accept a certified translation of a foreign license. A few want it notarized as well, so check with your office before you order.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Punjabi driver's license.
01
Scan both sides
The categories, restrictions and the issue and expiry dates are usually on the back. Upload the front and the back in one order so the translation covers the whole card.
02
Match the name to your passport
Tell us the English spelling you use. The translation shows the name as the license prints it and notes your spelling so the office can match both.
03
Ask the office which format they accept
Some DMVs want a certified translation, others want it notarized as well. Check before you order and add notarization at checkout if they ask for it.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Punjabi driver's license translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the driver's license is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
My new card license is in English. Do I need a translation?
Often not. The card licenses issued through the national Sarathi system are mostly in English. A translation matters when the card has Gurmukhi on it, when you need the older booklet to prove your first issue date, or when the recipient wants every page in English with a certification.
Does a certified translation let me drive in the US on my Punjab license?
No. A translation makes the license readable; it does not change what the state allows. Each state sets its own rules for visitors and new residents, and residents usually have to get a local license. Check with the DMV in the state where you live.
I lost the old booklet. What can I translate instead?
The licensing authority can issue a duplicate, and the license details, including the first issue date, are on the national Parivahan record in English. If you need proof of driving history for Ontario or an insurer, ask the transport office for a letter of authenticity. Any Gurmukhi on that letter or on its stamp we translate.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
