Russian asylum documents translation for an I-589 filing or an immigration court hearing: a повестка from the военкомат, a протокол об административном правонарушении, a court постановление, a police refusal to open a case, a doctor's справка and the messages that carried the threats. Each file gets a signed certification, which the immigration court rule on foreign-language documents requires.
The papers a Russian-speaking asylum case is built from
Since 2022 the files from Russia and Belarus have a recognizable shape, and the Central Asian ones another. The translator carries the exact legal label on each paper, because the asylum officer reads the label as evidence.
Administrative protocols and court rulings
A protest arrest produces a протокол об административном правонарушении citing an article of the КоАП, most often 20.2 for an unauthorized assembly or 20.3.3 for discrediting the armed forces, and then a постановление from a районный суд ordering a fine or administrative arrest counted in days. Belarusian files from 2020 and 2021 carry the same pair under article 24.23 of the Belarusian code and a справка об освобождении from the detention center. The article number, the court and the sentence are translated exactly, with the article's title, because a US reader cannot look up the КоАП by number.
Military summons and mobilization papers
A повестка from the военкомат, a mobilization notice, entries in the военный билет and a refusal of alternative civilian service are the core of a draft-evasion claim. The summons states the reason for appearing, уточнение данных, медицинское освидетельствование or отправка к месту службы, and those are different things with different weight. Since 2023 summons are also served through Госуслуги and the electronic register, so a screenshot of the account page is translated alongside the paper form, with the delivery date.
Police refusals, medical certificates and extremism labels
A victim of a beating or a threat usually holds a заявление filed with the police, a талон-уведомление with its КУСП number, and a постановление об отказе в возбуждении уголовного дела. The refusal is often the strongest paper in the file, because it shows the state knew and did nothing. Medical evidence comes as a справка from a травмпункт or an акт судебно-медицинского освидетельствования. Where the claim rests on an organization banned as экстремистская or on the November 2023 ruling against the so-called international LGBT movement, the translation names the ruling and keeps the Russian label in brackets.
Who is asking for your Russian asylum documents translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS asylum offices
USCIS asks for a complete English translation of every foreign-language document and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
An immigration judge expects each exhibit translated in full and certified, filed with the original. Courts refuse summaries, so every page you file is translated whole.
Refugee claims in Canada accept a certified translation with the translator's affidavit. Order the certified translation and add notarization if your application guide asks for it.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Russian asylum documents.
01
Send every page, including the envelopes
Police reports, threat letters, medical reports and newspaper clippings each count. Postmarks and envelopes show when and where a letter was sent, so scan them too.
02
Keep handwritten pages readable
Letters and notes are often handwritten. Photograph each page flat in good light, and tell us any names or places that are hard to make out.
03
Give us the names as your application spells them
Your I-589 fixes the English spelling of your name and of each family member. Tell us that spelling so every document in the file matches.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Russian asylum documents translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the asylum documents is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
Translate every page of each document you submit. The immigration court rule and the USCIS asylum office both want a complete translation, and a partial one invites the argument that something was left out. A court ruling in Russia is often three or four pages, mostly boilerplate, and that boilerplate is where the article number and the judge's name sit. Leaving out the boilerplate saves little and costs more in credibility.
My arrest was reported by OVD-Info or Mediazona. Should I translate the article?
Yes, if it names you, your case or the protest you were detained at. An independent report written at the time backs up your protocol and court ruling. Send the page with its headline, date and outlet name visible, or a saved PDF if the site is blocked where you are. We translate the full article, and lists of detainees are translated with your entry kept in its place on the list.
How do you spell Chechen or Central Asian names from Russian papers?
Police and court papers from Chechnya are in Russian, and the clerk wrote your name in Russian Cyrillic, which may not match the Latin spelling in your passport or I-589. We transliterate the name as the document prints it and add the spelling from your passport beside it, so the officer sees one person. Send the passport photo page with the order. Kazakh and Kyrgyz forms print two columns, and both are translated.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
