Russian diploma translation to English for a credential evaluator, ECFMG, a state licensing board, a US employer or a graduate school, from a current диплом о высшем образовании, a blue or red Soviet diploma, a техникум or колледж diploma, or a кандидат наук certificate. We translate the qualification and specialty lines word for word, because those lines decide what the degree is worth in the US.
The lines on a Russian diploma that decide the evaluation
A Russian diploma is a short document, one page with a title and a few numbered lines, and nearly every line has a legal meaning that a loose translation loses.
Квалификация and специальность
The diploma states that the государственная экзаменационная комиссия awarded a квалификация (врач, инженер, экономист, учитель) по специальности or по направлению подготовки, with a code such as 31.05.01 Лечебное дело. A specialist diploma after five or six years is the one evaluators argue over: some treat it as a bachelor's, others as a master's or something between, and ECFMG needs the exact medical qualification. We keep the qualification and the specialty title as printed, with the code, and never substitute a US degree name.
Series, number and the 1990s change
Each diploma carries a series and number and a регистрационный номер assigned by the university, which is what a verifying office checks. Soviet diplomas are small hardback booklets, blue for the standard diploma and red for the диплом с отличием, the honors version. After 1991 the title line changed to диплом о высшем образовании, and after 2011 to диплом бакалавра, специалиста or магистра. The translation says which generation the document is from so an evaluator reads it against the right system.
Кандидат наук and vocational diplomas
A диплом кандидата наук is issued on the decision of a dissertation council confirmed by the ВАК, the Higher Attestation Commission, and names the branch of science and the scientific specialty; US evaluators often compare it to a PhD, and the translation gives the council's decision date. Below the university level, a диплом о среднем профессиональном образовании from a техникум or колледж awards a working qualification such as медицинская сестра or техник, which licensing boards for nursing and trades read closely. Each diploma is one page at $25, and its приложение is translated as a second page.
Who is asking for your Russian diploma translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
Credential evaluators
WES, ECE and similar services ask for a word-for-word certified translation sent with the original. The degree name stays in the original language beside the English.
Physicians trained abroad send their diploma and transcript through ECFMG, which asks for an English translation of every document that is not in English.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Russian diploma.
01
Scan the back of the diploma
Registration numbers, the ministry stamp and the book and folio entries are often printed on the reverse. Send both sides.
02
Send the companion document
A professional license, a graduation act or a transcript often goes with the diploma. Upload the set so the numbers and dates are translated consistently.
03
Tell us who the translation is for
An evaluator, a licensing board and a university each read the degree name differently. Say in the order notes where it is going.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Russian diploma translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the diploma is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
Does an evaluator need the diploma translated, or will it do its own?
Most require a certified English translation sent with the document, and some, WES among them, ask the university to send the record directly in a sealed envelope. Check the evaluator's country page for Russia before ordering, then send us the diploma and the приложение. We translate the stamps and the signature block as well, since the evaluator compares them to the original.
Do I need an apostille on my Russian diploma for the US?
Not for USCIS or most employers, and not for an evaluator unless its instructions say so. If you do need one, the apostille on an education document in Russia is issued by the regional education authority, not the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and it has to be done before the diploma leaves Russia or through someone there with a power of attorney. We translate the apostille with the diploma as part of the same page.
My Soviet diploma is from a university in Almaty, Tashkent or Kyiv. Is it a Russian diploma?
For translation, usually yes. Soviet diplomas from the other republics were mostly filled in on the all-Union form in Russian, sometimes with a second text in the republic's language, and both texts are translated. For the evaluation they are diplomas of the country where the university now stands, so the translation names the institution as printed and gives its present name and country in brackets.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
