Russian birth certificate translation to English for USCIS, a green card interview or a US passport, from a Soviet-era свидетельство о рождении or the current Russian form, and from the Russian-language certificates still issued in Kazakhstan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Moldova.
The certificate changed shape when the Soviet Union ended, and an adult's certificate and a child's may be two different documents from two different countries.
Soviet form, current form
A Soviet certificate is a small folded booklet with the date of birth written out in words and the place of birth naming the republic, the RSFSR, the Kazakh SSR or the Uzbek SSR. The current Russian certificate is an A4 sheet with a series and number, the запись акта о рождении number and date, and the ЗАГС office that registered the birth. We translate the republic as printed and give a renamed city, Leningrad, Sverdlovsk, Frunze, its present name in brackets.
Three names, and the parents' line
The child and each parent are written with surname, given name and patronymic, and the parents' line in a Soviet certificate also records their национальность. That field is translated as nationality in the Soviet sense, meaning ethnicity, with a note, because a US reader would otherwise take it for citizenship. Current Russian certificates drop the field; some Central Asian ones keep it.
The back of the certificate
The reverse often carries more than the front: a штамп о гражданстве from the migration office confirming the child's Russian citizenship, where older children had a separate вкладыш, a note that a passport was issued, and sometimes the apostille. Each stamp is translated with the office and date it names. Send both sides even if the back looks blank.
Who is asking for your Russian birth certificate translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Russian birth certificate.
01
Scan the whole page
Include the back, the margins and any marginal notes. A later correction or a recognition of paternity is often written in the margin, and the recipient needs to see it translated.
02
Give us the English spelling of each name
If your passport or green card spells a name without an accent, tell us at checkout. The translation keeps the names as the certificate writes them and notes the spelling you use.
03
Order the format the recipient asked for
If they want the long form, send the long form. We translate what you upload and cannot add parents' details that a short-form extract leaves out.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Russian birth certificate translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the birth certificate is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
My certificate is from Kazakhstan or Belarus but written in Russian. Which language do I order?
Order Russian if the entries are in Russian. Kazakhstan, Belarus and Kyrgyzstan print the certificate in the state language and Russian side by side, and both texts are translated. Uzbek and Moldovan certificates from the 1990s are often Russian too, while newer ones are in Uzbek or Romanian only, and those go under that language. Send a photo and we tell you which it is.
How do you handle the series, number and registration details?
They stay exactly as printed. The series keeps its Cyrillic letters with a Latin transliteration beside it, the number is copied digit for digit, and the registration entry number and date are kept separate from the date of birth. These are the fields an officer uses to match the translation to the original, so nothing on them is simplified.
Do you translate a US birth certificate into Russian?
Yes. Parents need it to register a child born in the US at a Russian consulate, to apply for the child's Russian passport, or for a pension or inheritance matter in Russia. We translate into Russian and can notarize the translation. Ask the consulate first whether it accepts a translation certified in the US or wants to certify it itself.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
