Russian marriage certificate translation to English for a spousal petition, a K-1 follow-up or a name change at the Social Security office, from the current свидетельство о заключении брака, the Soviet свидетельство о браке, or the bilingual certificates still issued in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Belarus. We also translate a US marriage certificate into Russian for a consulate or a ЗАГС office.
What a свидетельство о заключении брака records that a US certificate does not
A Russian marriage is made by the ЗАГС registrar, not by a ceremony, so the certificate is a record of a registry entry and it carries lines a US clerk never writes.
The surname line
Under the two names, the certificate states фамилии после заключения брака, the surname each spouse carries from the marriage on. A wife who kept her name, took her husband's, or joined the two with a hyphen is recorded here, and this line is what the Social Security office or a DMV reads as proof of a name change. We translate it as a separate labelled field and never fold it into the names above, because the maiden name and the married name must both be visible on one page.
Registration date, not wedding date
The certificate gives the date the marriage was registered, the number of the запись акта о заключении брака and the ЗАГС office, often with a district in its name (Отдел ЗАГС Центрального района). Soviet and 1990s certificates were filled in by hand, and the office stamp may be the only legible source of the place. USCIS reads the registration date as the date of marriage, so we keep it labelled exactly as printed.
The passport stamp and the справка
If the marriage has since ended and the certificate was surrendered at the divorce, the ЗАГС issues a справка о заключении брака instead, a one-page statement of the same entry. We translate that справка as its own document and say so in the certification, since a US reader will otherwise look for a certificate that no longer exists.
Who is asking for your Russian marriage certificate translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
IRCC accepts a certified translation with the translator's affidavit. Order the certified translation and add notarization if your application guide asks for it.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Russian marriage certificate.
01
Send every page, including the register entry
Many certificates are an extract of a register entry. If you have both the extract and the register page, upload both so the witnesses, the property regime and the marginal notes are translated too.
02
Spell both names the way the passports do
The translation keeps each name as the certificate writes it. Tell us the spelling each spouse uses in English so the recipient can match the two documents.
03
Check whether the recipient wants a recent copy
USCIS and many consulates ask for a certificate issued recently. Get the fresh copy first and then order its translation, so the issue dates match.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Russian marriage certificate translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the marriage certificate is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
Does USCIS need my Russian marriage certificate apostilled before translation?
No. USCIS asks for the certificate and a certified English translation, not an apostille. An apostille is wanted when the certificate goes the other way, to a Russian consulate or a court in Russia, or when a US agency specifically requests one. If your certificate already carries an apostille from the regional ЗАГС authority, we translate the apostille stamp too, as one extra block on the same page.
My Soviet certificate says свидетельство о браке and has a different layout. Is that a problem?
No. Until the late 1990s the form was titled свидетельство о браке, the entries were handwritten, and the surname line was a single phrase rather than two fields. It is the same record, and USCIS accepts it with a certified translation. If the handwriting has faded, a повторное certificate from the ЗАГС that holds the entry is a cleaner source, but we translate the original if that is what you have.
Can you translate a US marriage certificate into Russian?
Yes. A Russian consulate asks for it when a spouse applies for a Russian passport under a new surname or registers a child, and a ЗАГС, a notary or a court in Russia needs it for a pension, an inheritance or a later divorce. US certificates vary by state and county, so we translate the exact form you hold, apostille included, and keep the county clerk's title as printed.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
