Ukrainian college application translation to English for a US university, community college or scholarship fund, and into Ukrainian for a student applying to a Ukrainian university from abroad. A Ukrainian applicant sends a set of papers an admissions office has never seen in this form, and the translation is what makes the set readable.
A US admissions office expects a transcript, a diploma and test scores. The Ukrainian equivalents are the атестат with its додаток and an НМТ or ЗНО certificate, plus papers that have no US counterpart.
Свідоцтво or атестат, and the medal
School leavers since 2019 receive a свідоцтво про здобуття повної загальної середньої освіти; before that it was the атестат про повну загальну середню освіту, and the two are the same document under different names. A graduate with top marks has з відзнакою printed on it and may hold a золота or срібна медаль, which an admissions office reads as honours once translated. A student still in school, applying in the final year, sends a довідка з місця навчання, a letter from the school confirming enrolment and the expected graduation date.
ЗНО and НМТ results
Until 2021 school leavers sat the ЗНО, the external independent testing, and received a сертифікат per subject with a score on a 100 to 200 scale. Since 2022 the test has been the НМТ, a multi-subject test taken on a computer, in Ukraine or at centres abroad, with results printed from the applicant's online account. Neither is an SAT, and the translation does not convert the scores; it names the test, the subject and the scale so the admissions reader can look it up.
Характеристика and recommendation letters
A Ukrainian school writes a характеристика, a formal appraisal of the student in the third person stamped by the director, rather than a personal recommendation letter. US colleges want letters addressed to them, so many applicants send both: the характеристика translated as what it is, and a teacher's letter written for the application, which we translate if the teacher wrote it in Ukrainian. Keep the stamp and the director's signature in the scan; the translation describes them.
Who is asking for your Ukrainian college application translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
Universities and admissions offices
Admissions offices accept a certified translation they can read next to the original. A PDF is usually enough; ask for a hard copy if they want one.
Applicants to US medical programs send transcripts and diplomas through ECFMG, which asks for an English translation of every document that is not in English.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Ukrainian college application.
01
Send the whole packet in one order
Transcripts, the diploma, recommendation letters and the grading scale travel together. One order keeps the names, dates and course titles consistent across every page.
02
Separate the records from your essays
Admissions offices want official records translated word for word. Essays and statements are usually written in English by the applicant, so upload only what the school will read as evidence.
03
Count on more than one page per sheet
A transcript or a course description holds a lot of text. The quote counts words, not sheets, so a dense sheet may price as two or three pages.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Ukrainian college application translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the college application is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
The Common App itself does not check translations; each college does, and colleges generally ask for an English translation of any document not in English, uploaded by the counselor or sent with the transcript. Our translation carries a signed certification, which is what those offices mean by official. Ask the college whether it wants the translation uploaded by the school counselor, since a Ukrainian school may need the English version in hand to do that.
I finished school in Ukraine during the war and some papers exist only in Diia or as a PDF from the school. Is that enough?
Often yes. Schools issued certificates electronically in 2022 and 2023, and the Ministry of Education's register of education documents confirms a свідоцтво by its number. Send the PDF or the Diia copy and we translate it. If the college wants a paper original, ask the school, or the regional department of education that holds a displaced school's records, which of them can reprint it.
Can you translate a US high school transcript into Ukrainian for a Ukrainian university?
Yes. A student applying to a Ukrainian university with a US diploma is asked for a Ukrainian translation of the diploma and transcript, with an apostille from the state on the US originals. We translate the transcript into Ukrainian with the grades left on the US scale and the credit system explained in a note, and recognition of the US diploma is then done by the university or by ENIC Ukraine.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
