Chinese marriage certificate translation to English for an I-130 spouse petition, a green card interview, a name change or a divorce filing, from the red 结婚证 booklet issued by a 民政局 marriage registry or the 结婚公证 a notary office draws from it. We also translate US marriage certificates into Chinese for use in China.
Written for Chinese (Mandarin) Simplified marriage certificate records
What the 结婚证 says, and what it leaves out
A mainland marriage exists from the moment the 民政局 registers it. The booklet records that registration and nothing about the wedding.
Registration date, not wedding date
The 登记日期 on the certificate is the legal date of marriage. Many couples register months before the banquet or long after it, and some register only when a visa needs it. US forms ask for the date of marriage, and the answer is the registration date on the 结婚证, not the date in the wedding photos. The translation labels it as the registration date, so an officer reading the petition sees why it differs from the anniversary mentioned in the affidavits.
Two booklets, one record
Each spouse receives an identical booklet, so the 结婚证字号 and the registration details appear on both and you only need to send one. The format used nationwide since 2004 prints the couple's joint photo, each spouse's name, sex, date of birth, nationality and ID number, the 婚姻登记员 who registered them and the red 婚姻登记专用章 of the registry. Certificates from before 2004 vary by province, some a single folded sheet, and a 补发 replacement carries the reissue date next to the original one.
No name change, no witnesses
A Chinese wife keeps her own surname, so the booklet shows two unrelated family names and has no maiden-name field. There are no witnesses, no officiant and no religious record: a church or mosque ceremony in China has no legal standing, and a 婚礼 invitation is not evidence of anything. If she uses her husband's surname in the US, tell us at checkout and the note on the translation links the two names.
Who is asking for your Chinese (Mandarin) Simplified marriage certificate translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
IRCC accepts a certified translation with the translator's affidavit. Order the certified translation and add notarization if your application guide asks for it.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Chinese (Mandarin) Simplified marriage certificate.
01
Send every page, including the register entry
Many certificates are an extract of a register entry. If you have both the extract and the register page, upload both so the witnesses, the property regime and the marginal notes are translated too.
02
Spell both names the way the passports do
The translation keeps each name as the certificate writes it. Tell us the spelling each spouse uses in English so the recipient can match the two documents.
03
Check whether the recipient wants a recent copy
USCIS and many consulates ask for a certificate issued recently. Get the fresh copy first and then order its translation, so the issue dates match.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Chinese (Mandarin) Simplified marriage certificate translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the marriage certificate is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
The consulate asked for a notarial marriage certificate. Is that different from the 结婚证?
Yes. A 结婚公证 is drawn up by a 公证处 from the booklet and states that the couple registered their marriage on a date at a named registry. The US consulate in Guangzhou lists it for immigrant visa cases, while USCIS inside the US generally accepts the 结婚证 itself with a certified translation. We translate either, and the certification covers the notary's text, the 公证员 signature and the attached copy of the booklet.
One of us is American and we married in China. What does the certificate show?
The foreign spouse's 国籍 field gives the country, and the 身份证件号 field gives the passport number instead of an 18-digit ID. A marriage with a foreigner is registered at the provincial or designated municipal registry that handles 涉外婚姻, not the county office, and that office's name is on the seal. The translation gives the foreign name as it is in the passport and keeps the Chinese transliteration in brackets.
Can you translate a US marriage certificate into Chinese?
Yes. Couples need it to update the marital status on a 户口簿, to buy property together, for a Q or S family visa or for an inheritance. Get the apostille from the issuing state first. China does not re-register a marriage that took place abroad; the apostilled certificate and its translation are the proof.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
