Portuguese affidavit translation to English of a Brazilian declaração with firma reconhecida at a cartório, an escritura pública declaratória or a termo de declarações, for a USCIS petition, a US court, a university or an insurer. We also translate US affidavits into Portuguese for a Brazilian consulate, cartório or court.
Brazil has no affidavit, and that changes how the paper is translated
Nobody in Brazil swears a statement before a notary the way a US affiant does. The nearest documents are these, and each carries a different weight.
Declaração with firma reconhecida
The everyday Brazilian statement is a typed or handwritten declaração that ends declaro, sob as penas da lei, the formula that points to the crime of falsidade ideológica. The signer takes it to a tabelionato de notas for reconhecimento de firma, where the escrevente matches the signature to a card on file (por semelhança) or watches the person sign (por autenticidade). The stamp, the selo and the escrevente's signature are what give the paper standing. We translate sob as penas da lei as under penalty of law, not under penalty of perjury, because the formula points to a false statement in a document, not a false oath, and we translate the whole firma stamp.
Escritura pública declaratória
When the statement must carry more weight, the declarant goes before the tabelião and it is written into the notary's book as an escritura pública declaratória: a declaração de dependência econômica, de residência or de convivência, sometimes with two witnesses. The declarant leaves with a traslado, the first copy, and anyone can later order a certidão of the same act. Both cite the livro, the folhas and the selo de fiscalização of the state's Tribunal de Justiça. The translation keeps the tabelião's opening and closing formulas instead of cutting to the content.
What US readers receive from Brazil
Relatives in Brazil write bona fide marriage statements for a spouse petition as declarações with firma reconhecida. A registro tardio of a birth rests on declarações de testemunhas. A declaração de hipossuficiência supports a fee waiver or free legal aid. A declaração de residência proves where someone lived for an address history. A termo de declarações is what the Polícia Civil writes down at the delegacia. In each, the translation keeps the declarant's RG and CPF and the cartório's name and city.
Who is asking for your Portuguese (Brazil) affidavit translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
Affidavits standing in for a missing birth or marriage record are accepted with a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
A court admits a translated affidavit with the translator's signed certification, and many ask for it notarized. Add notarization at checkout if the clerk asks for it.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Portuguese (Brazil) affidavit.
01
Send the signed and notarized version
An affidavit is the sworn statement plus the notary block, stamp and seal. Upload the executed copy, with every exhibit it refers to, not the draft.
02
Give us the names as the passport spells them
The affiant, the notary and anyone named in the statement keep their names as written, with your English spelling noted, so the recipient can match the affidavit to the rest of the file.
03
Tell us where it is going
A court, USCIS and a foreign registry each want the certification handled differently. Say which in the order notes and we match the format.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Portuguese (Brazil) affidavit translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the affidavit is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
Does USCIS treat a Brazilian declaração as an affidavit?
USCIS asks for sworn or affirmed statements from people with direct knowledge, giving their full name, address, date and place of birth and how they know the facts. A Brazilian declaração that carries those details, the signature and the reconhecimento de firma meets that shape, and officers see them routinely in spouse petitions. Our certification covers the accuracy of the translation; it does not add an oath the original did not have.
Can you notarize the translated declaração?
Yes, as an add-on. A US notary witnesses the translator's signature on the certification, which some courts, banks and universities ask for. The notary does not swear the Brazilian declarant and cannot turn the declaração into a US affidavit. If the recipient needs the declarant's own oath, that is done before a US notary or at the US consulate in Brazil, and we translate the result.
I am an American marrying in Brazil. Can you translate my affidavit of eligibility into Portuguese?
The cartório's habilitação de casamento asks a foreigner for proof of single status, and since the US issues no such certificate, Americans swear a statement at the US consulate or before a US notary with an apostille. The cartório then wants that statement in a tradução juramentada, which only a Brazilian sworn translator can sign. Our Portuguese version suits a fiancé's family or the lawyer preparing the papers.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
