Chinese birth certificate translation to English for USCIS, a US passport or a school, from the hospital-issued 出生医学证明, a notarial 出生公证 or the 户口簿 page that records your birth. Every field, number and red seal is translated, and we translate US birth certificates into Chinese as well.

Three documents that prove a birth in China
Which one you send depends on when you were born and what the recipient asked for, and each is translated differently.
The 出生医学证明, field by field
The Medical Certificate of Birth is one sheet with a number of one letter and nine digits, printed with a barcode since the seventh edition came in on 1 April 2023. It records the newborn's name, sex, date and hour of birth, gestational weeks, weight and length, then each parent's name, age, nationality, 民族 and ID number, and the hospital. The 签发机构 seal at the foot names the hospital or health office that issued it, and the translation gives that name in full.
Born before 1996: the notarial certificate
Hospitals only began issuing the 出生医学证明 in 1996, so anyone older proves birth with a 出生公证 from a 公证处, drawn up from the household register and police records and usually carrying the applicant's photo. A 公证处 can also notarize a copy of the hospital certificate. These are different documents: one states the facts of a birth, the other certifies a copy. The English title on our translation says which one it is, so an officer knows what they are reading.
The 户口簿 page
The register page for one person, the 常住人口登记卡, gives the relationship to the head of household, any 曾用名 former name, the date and place of birth, the 籍贯 and the 18-digit 公民身份号码. Place of birth and 籍贯 are separate fields and are translated as such, because the 籍贯 is often a county the person has never lived in. A hukou name can differ from the hospital certificate if the child was named later; the translation keeps both and notes the link.
Who is asking for your Chinese (Mandarin) Simplified birth certificate translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Chinese (Mandarin) Simplified birth certificate.
01
Scan the whole page
Include the back, the margins and any marginal notes. A later correction or a recognition of paternity is often written in the margin, and the recipient needs to see it translated.
02
Give us the English spelling of each name
If your passport or green card spells a name without an accent, tell us at checkout. The translation keeps the names as the certificate writes them and notes the spelling you use.
03
Order the format the recipient asked for
If they want the long form, send the long form. We translate what you upload and cannot add parents' details that a short-form extract leaves out.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Chinese (Mandarin) Simplified birth certificate translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the birth certificate is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
The notarial booklet already has an English page. Do I still need your translation?
Often yes. The notary's English page is a translation of the Chinese 公证书, but it carries no translator's certification, and many recipients ask for one. We check the notary's English against the Chinese, correct anything that is wrong, and certify the whole booklet, including the 公证员's signature and the 公证处 seal. If the office receiving it has accepted a notary booklet from you before, ask them first.
Why does the translation show an hour of birth and the mother's age?
Because the certificate does. The 出生医学证明 records the minute of birth and each parent's age at the time, not their birth dates, and a certified translation carries every field over. Dates are written with the month in words so year-month-day order cannot be misread, and the name is given in the pinyin on the passport with the characters in brackets.
Do you translate a US birth certificate into Chinese?
Yes. Parents need it for a Chinese visa or travel document for a US-born child, or to register the child on a 户口. Since November 2023 the mainland accepts an apostille from the issuing state in place of consular legalization. Some 派出所 and consulates accept only translations from an agency on their own list, so ask the receiving office first, and we can notarize the translation if they want that.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
