What the wording on a Chinese diploma means

Neither certificate is a one-line award. Each is a paragraph of fixed wording with blanks, and the blanks are where the information is.

The 毕业证书 paragraph

A graduation certificate reads: student so-and-so, sex, born on a date, studied in the named 专业 at this university from September of one year to June or July of another, completed all courses in the 教学计划, passed, and is permitted to graduate. The 学习形式 line says whether that was 普通全日制 full-time study, 成人教育, 网络教育 or 自学考试, and a 自考 certificate is co-sealed by the provincial self-study examination committee and the host university. Evaluators treat these forms differently, so the translation names the form in full and never shortens it to a bare degree.

The 学位证书 since 2016

Degree certificates printed before 2016 came from the 国务院学位委员会 in one national design; from 1 January 2016 each university prints its own, so two graduates of the same year can hold certificates that look nothing alike. The text still names the degree by discipline, 工学学士, 文学硕士 or 医学博士, and the translation gives the discipline and the level, Bachelor of Engineering rather than a bare BA. A 专业学位 such as 工程硕士 or 工商管理硕士 is named as a professional degree.

结业 and 肄业 are not graduation

A 结业证书 means the student finished the period of study but did not meet every requirement, and a 肄业证书 means they left before finishing. Both look like a diploma, with the same photo, seal and number. The translation titles them Certificate of Completion and Certificate of Incomplete Study and does not use the word diploma, because an evaluator who reads graduation where the Chinese says 结业 will reject the file when the verification report disagrees.

Who is asking for your Chinese (Mandarin) Simplified diploma translation?

The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.

Credential evaluators

WES, ECE and similar services ask for a word-for-word certified translation sent with the original. The degree name stays in the original language beside the English.

Before you upload

Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Chinese (Mandarin) Simplified diploma.

01

Scan the back of the diploma

Registration numbers, the ministry stamp and the book and folio entries are often printed on the reverse. Send both sides.

02

Send the companion document

A professional license, a graduation act or a transcript often goes with the diploma. Upload the set so the numbers and dates are translated consistently.

03

Tell us who the translation is for

An evaluator, a licensing board and a university each read the degree name differently. Say in the order notes where it is going.

Chinese (Mandarin) Simplified Diploma FAQ

Most questions about pricing and turnaround can be answered faster by requesting a quote.

Request a Quote

The photo on my diploma has an embossed seal over it. How is that translated?
As a note. The 钢印 is a dry steel seal pressed through the photo and the paper, and it carries the university's name. The translation marks the photo, transcribes the seal's text and notes that it is embossed, so a reader comparing the copy with the original understands the ring across the photo. The red 校印 and the 校长 signature or stamp are handled the same way, with the names written out.
Do you translate a 高中毕业证 or a 中专 vocational diploma?
Yes. A 高中毕业证书 is issued by the school under the provincial education department, with the 学籍号 student number and the 会考 or 学业水平考试 pass line; a 中专 or 技校 certificate names the 专业 and the vocational level. US high schools, community colleges and trade licensing boards ask for these. Each is translated at $25 a page with the seals and the registration number.
Does a US degree need a Chinese translation for China?
For the Ministry of Education's 留学服务中心 认证 of a foreign degree, applicants upload the English certificate and the office does not currently ask for a translation. An employer, a 人才引进 talent program, a 公务员 recruitment or a 落户 application often does want the degree and the transcript in Chinese. We translate them into Simplified Chinese and can notarize the translation if the office asks.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
