French Background Check Translation

French background check translation for a US employer, a screening firm, a licensing board, a landlord or a security clearance that has to verify years spent in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Québec or francophone Africa. We translate the certificat de travail from each employer, the relevé de carrière, the justificatifs de domicile, the bulletin n°3 and the diplômes a screener asks for, and a US check into French for a French employer, with a signed certification.

Verifying a French work, address and education history

A US screening firm rarely gets an answer from a French HR department, so the check runs on the papers the candidate already holds.

Certificat de travail and the relevé de carrière

The Code du travail obliges every employer to hand over a certificat de travail when a contract ends, stating the dates and the posts held and nothing else; it is silent on why the person left, so the translation is too. The attestation employeur sent to France Travail gives the motif de rupture, and the solde de tout compte lists the final sums. For a long career, the relevé de carrière from the Assurance retraite lists every employer by year with the trimestres validés, a whole work history on one document, which screening firms accept translated with its headings intact.

Address history without a residence register

France does not register residence, so there is no certificate of address. A screener gets justificatifs de domicile instead: an EDF bill, a quittance de loyer or an avis de taxe foncière, and for someone living with family an attestation d'hébergement signed by the host with a copy of their ID. Belgium and Switzerland do register residence, and the commune or the contrôle des habitants issues a certificat de résidence avec historique.

Registers a job may trigger

A post with children or in sport in France is checked through the contrôle d'honorabilité, which queries the FIJAIS and the bulletin n°2 on the employer's request and gives a result, not the record itself. Regulated professions sit on a public tableau kept by the Ordre des médecins, des avocats or des experts-comptables, and the extrait from it is what a licensing board wants. Recent national diplomas can be checked by the employer on diplome.gouv.fr with a code the graduate generates, which saves a screener writing to the université.

Who is asking for your French background check translation?

The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.

USCIS and the National Visa Center

Green card and visa applications ask for police and court records with a complete English translation and a signed certification. No notarization is needed.

USCIS translation requirements

Employers and licensing boards

An employer or a professional board checking your record from abroad accepts a certified translation they can read next to the original. Ask whether they want a hard copy.

Certified translations

Residency and work permits abroad

An FBI or state background check going to another country usually needs an apostille and a translation into that country's language, sometimes notarized.

Before you upload

Three things that save a day of back and forth on a French background check.

01

Get the check issued first, then order the translation

Most background checks are valid for a few months. Have it issued, then upload it, so the translation and the original are current together.

02

Send the report the checklist names

A police certificate, a court record and an FBI identity history summary are different documents. Read the employer or consulate checklist and send the one it asks for.

03

Keep the verification code in the scan

Online reports carry a QR code or a reference number that the recipient uses to confirm the result. Scan the whole page so it is translated with the rest.

French Background Check FAQ

Most questions about pricing and turnaround can be answered faster by requesting a quote.

Request a Quote

Can a US screening company request my casier judiciaire for me?
No. The bulletin n°3 is issued only to the person it concerns, the n°2 only to French administrations, and the Code de procédure pénale gives a foreign employer no route to either. You request the n°3 yourself, online or by post, and hand it to the screener with our translation. French employers are in the same position: they may ask a candidate to produce the n°3 but cannot pull it.
A French employer wants my US background check in French. What do they expect?
Usually the FBI Identity History Summary, since the US keeps no national casier judiciaire that a person can request, plus any state check the post calls for. Jobs vetted by a French authority, such as private security or work with children, set their own list. We translate the summary and its apostille into French. If HR asks for a traduction assermentée, it has to come from a translator sworn in France, and we are not.
Do you translate bulletins de paie and references as part of the check?
Yes. French employers rarely write references, so a screener usually verifies salary from the last bulletins de paie and current employment from an attestation de travail on letterhead. A lettre de recommandation, when one exists, is translated in full with the signature block. Everything is $25 per page of up to 250 words, and one order can hold the whole file.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
