Portuguese background check translation to English of the Brazilian certidões an employer, a screening company, a nursing or engineering board, an adoption agency or a landlord asks for: court certidões de distribuição, the CNDT labor certificate, a Serasa credit report, a DETRAN driving record, the CTPS employment history and reference letters. We also translate US background reports into Portuguese for a Brazilian employer.
The state Tribunal de Justiça issues certidões de distribuição for civil and criminal cases, the Tribunal Regional Federal for federal ones, the Tribunal Regional do Trabalho for labor suits, and the Tribunal Superior do Trabalho issues the CNDT, the Certidão Negativa de Débitos Trabalhistas showing no unpaid labor judgments. Each either reads nada consta or lists the processos by their 20-digit CNJ number, and a civil hit can be followed by a certidão de objeto e pé that says what the case is about and where it stands. We translate the heading, the certifying text and each case line with the court and the class of action.
Employment, credit and driving
The Carteira de Trabalho Digital extract from gov.br lists every registered job with the CBO occupation code, the admission and dismissal dates and the reason for leaving, and it is what a screener uses instead of calling former employers. Serasa and SPC issue credit reports that show whether the person is negativado, and the Cartório de Protesto issues a certidão of protested debts. The state DETRAN issues a certidão de prontuário for the CNH with points and infractions. Each office has its own layout, and we translate them as separate documents.
Quitação eleitoral, reservista and reference letters
Voting is compulsory in Brazil, and public employers, along with some private ones, ask for a certidão de quitação eleitoral from the Tribunal Superior Eleitoral, which proves the person voted or justified each absence. Men are asked for the Certificado de Reservista or the Certificado de Dispensa de Incorporação, showing military service was settled. Neither has a US equivalent, so each gets a one-line gloss. A carta de recomendação from a former employer comes on letterhead with the company's CNPJ and is translated in full, signature and stamp included.
Who is asking for your Portuguese (Brazil) background check translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS and the National Visa Center
Green card and visa applications ask for police and court records with a complete English translation and a signed certification. No notarization is needed.
An employer or a professional board checking your record from abroad accepts a certified translation they can read next to the original. Ask whether they want a hard copy.
An FBI or state background check going to another country usually needs an apostille and a translation into that country's language, sometimes notarized.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Portuguese (Brazil) background check.
01
Get the check issued first, then order the translation
Most background checks are valid for a few months. Have it issued, then upload it, so the translation and the original are current together.
02
Send the report the checklist names
A police certificate, a court record and an FBI identity history summary are different documents. Read the employer or consulate checklist and send the one it asks for.
03
Keep the verification code in the scan
Online reports carry a QR code or a reference number that the recipient uses to confirm the result. Scan the whole page so it is translated with the rest.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Portuguese (Brazil) background check translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the background check is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
A US screening company asked for a "Brazilian criminal and court check". What do I pull?
The Polícia Federal certidão, the state atestado for each state you lived in, the Tribunal de Justiça certidão de distribuição criminal, and for most jobs the cível one and the CNDT. Most are issued online and each usually prints on one page. A US screener searching by name alone will hit homonyms, so the translation keeps the nome da mãe, RG and CPF from each header.
My licensing board wants proof of good standing from my profession in Brazil.
Your conselho issues it: COREN for nurses, CRM for doctors, CREA for engineers, OAB for lawyers, CRC for accountants. Ask for a certidão de regularidade and a certidão negativa ético-disciplinar, which together show the registration is active and no disciplinary case is open. We translate both, with the registration number and the regional council, and can notarize the translation if the board requires it.
Some of my old jobs are missing from the Carteira de Trabalho Digital. What do I send?
The paper booklet. The digital carteira is built from government records, and older contracts can be missing or incomplete there, while the paper CTPS still shows each employer's anotações: the contrato de trabalho page, salary changes, férias and the dismissal date. We translate the pages that carry entries and skip the blank ones.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
