French tax return translation of the déclaration de revenus 2042 and the avis d'impôt sur le revenu from the DGFiP, a Québec TP-1 and avis de cotisation, or a Belgian avertissement-extrait de rôle, for the IRS, a US mortgage lender, a family court, a university or USCIS, and a Form 1040 into French for the centre des finances publiques. Each form is translated field by field, with a signed certification.
The déclaration and the avis are two different papers
In France the taxpayer files one document and the state answers with another, and a US reader usually needs the answer.
Déclaration 2042 and its annexes
The déclaration de revenus, form 2042, is filed per foyer fiscal, so a married couple or PACS partners appear as déclarant 1 and déclarant 2 on one return. Wages go in boxes 1AJ and 1BJ, pensions in 1AS and 1BS, and the annexes follow: 2042-C and 2042-C-PRO for other and self-employed income, 2044 for revenus fonciers from rental property, 2047 for income earned abroad, 2035 for a profession libérale and 2031 for a commerçant. Most clients hold the PDF from impots.gouv.fr. The translation keeps every box number so the reader can match it to the original.
Avis d'impôt sur le revenu
The avis d'imposition, issued each summer by the DGFiP, is the notice of assessment, and the document a lender or the IRS wants. It states the revenu brut global, the revenu fiscal de référence, the nombre de parts of the quotient familial, the impôt net and, since 2019, the taux de prélèvement à la source. Right after an online filing, impots.gouv.fr also issues an avis de situation déclarative, the ASDIR, which some lenders take until the avis arrives. For a Form 1116 foreign tax credit the impôt net line is the French tax paid, and we keep the French label beside the English so an examiner can find it.
Québec, Belgium and Switzerland
A Québec resident files two returns, the federal T1 and the provincial TP-1 to Revenu Québec, with the Relevé 1 from the employer as the Québec slip and the T4 as the federal one, and Revenu Québec answers with an avis de cotisation. Belgium's déclaration à l'impôt des personnes physiques is filed on Tax-on-web, and the assessment arrives as an avertissement-extrait de rôle, the paper Belgian banks ask for. A Swiss taxpayer in Geneva or Vaud receives a décision de taxation from the cantonal administration, with federal, cantonal and communal tax on one notice. A Relevé 1 or a T4 is the employer's slip, not a return, and the translation heads it that way.
Who is asking for your French tax return translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS and the National Visa Center
Sponsors filing an affidavit of support, and applicants proving income, submit tax returns with a complete English translation and a signed certification. No notarization is needed.
IRCC accepts a certified translation with the translator's affidavit. Order the certified translation and add notarization if your application guide asks for it.
A mortgage lender or a tax office assessing foreign income accepts a certified translation of the return and its schedules. Ask whether they want a hard copy and add it at checkout.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a French tax return.
01
Send the filed return, not the draft
The recipient wants the version the tax office accepted, with its filing stamp, receipt number or online confirmation. Include the confirmation page if your return was filed electronically.
02
Include every schedule and attachment
The income summary on the first page refers to schedules behind it. A consulate or a lender reading the total will look for the pages that support it.
03
Give us the taxpayer name as the passport spells it
Taxpayer numbers, amounts and the currency are copied exactly as printed. Tell us the English spelling of each name on the return so it matches the rest of your file.
Details and pricing
What is included in a French tax return translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the tax return is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
My lender wants the 2024 return. Which avis is that?
The one issued in summer 2025. A French avis carries the year it is sent and covers the income of the year before, so the avis d'impôt 2025 sur les revenus de 2024 is the one that matches a US 2024 return. The heading names both years and we translate it exactly, so the underwriter does not file it under the wrong year.
Does the IRS accept your translation of a French avis d'imposition?
When the IRS asks for a foreign-language document, in an audit or behind a Form 1116 claim, it wants an English translation with it, and our signed certification states who translated the form and that it is complete. US citizens living in France also keep translated avis for a Form 2555 exclusion claim or a treaty position, where the examiner needs to see the French tax assessed.
Do you translate a US Form 1040 into French?
Yes. A Form 1040 goes into French for the DGFiP when a resident of France reports US income on form 2047 and claims the crédit d'impôt under the France-US treaty, for a French bank weighing a prêt immobilier, for a juge aux affaires familiales setting a pension alimentaire against dollar income, or for Revenu Québec. The tax office may ask for a traducteur assermenté; a bank or a lawyer usually accepts our certified translation, and we can notarize it.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
