Written for Portuguese (Brazil) tax return records

A DIRPF is not a 1040, and the differences show up in translation

The Receita Federal's program generates the return as a long PDF, and several of its sections have no US counterpart.

Exercício versus ano-calendário

The cover reads Exercício 2026, Ano-calendário 2025: the exercício is the filing year and the ano-calendário the income year. A US reader sees 2026 and files it as the wrong year, so both labels are translated with their meaning. The cover also says whether the filer chose the modelo completo or the desconto simplificado. The figures tie back to the Informe de Rendimentos, the Comprovante de Rendimentos Pagos e de Imposto sobre a Renda Retido na Fonte that every employer, bank and the INSS issue, which does the job of a W-2 or 1099 and is usually sent with the return.

Bens e Direitos and the income groups

Unlike a 1040, the DIRPF lists what the filer owns: every property, vehicle, bank balance and investment under a numbered código with its acquisition cost in reais and a discriminação in the filer's own words. A lender or a divorce court reads this section as an asset statement, so every entry is translated in full. Income is split into rendimentos tributáveis recebidos de pessoa jurídica, rendimentos recebidos de pessoa física through the carnê-leão, rendimentos isentos e não tributáveis, which hold FGTS withdrawals, dividends and poupança interest, and rendimentos sujeitos à tributação exclusiva, where the 13º salário and investment income sit. Each group gets its description in English, not a single word.

Recibo, DARF and the saída definitiva

The recibo de entrega is a separate receipt with its número do recibo, the proof the return was filed and the number the next year's return asks for; lenders want it with the return. Tax due is paid by DARF under código 0211, and a refund appears on the restituição statement, so a DARF or a refund notice may be the page that proves the figures. A Brazilian who leaves for good files a Comunicação de Saída Definitiva and then a Declaração de Saída Definitiva do País. A translated copy of that declaração is what shows a US accountant or a court when Brazilian tax residency ended.

Who is asking for your Portuguese (Brazil) tax return translation?

The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.

USCIS and the National Visa Center

Sponsors filing an affidavit of support, and applicants proving income, submit tax returns with a complete English translation and a signed certification. No notarization is needed.

Lenders and tax authorities

A mortgage lender or a tax office assessing foreign income accepts a certified translation of the return and its schedules. Ask whether they want a hard copy and add it at checkout.

Certified translations

Before you upload

Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Portuguese (Brazil) tax return.

01

Send the filed return, not the draft

The recipient wants the version the tax office accepted, with its filing stamp, receipt number or online confirmation. Include the confirmation page if your return was filed electronically.

02

Include every schedule and attachment

The income summary on the first page refers to schedules behind it. A consulate or a lender reading the total will look for the pages that support it.

03

Give us the taxpayer name as the passport spells it

Taxpayer numbers, amounts and the currency are copied exactly as printed. Tell us the English spelling of each name on the return so it matches the rest of your file.

Portuguese (Brazil) Tax Return FAQ

Most questions about pricing and turnaround can be answered faster by requesting a quote.

Request a Quote

I claim the foreign tax credit. Does the IRS want my Brazilian return translated?
If the IRS asks you to document foreign tax paid, it expects the papers in English. The Informe de Rendimentos shows the imposto retido na fonte and the DIRPF's resumo shows imposto devido and imposto pago, which together support the credit. Translate the resumo, the rendimentos pages and the informe rather than the whole PDF, and keep the originals in Portuguese with the file.
The DIRPF PDF is over twenty pages. Do I have to translate all of it?
Usually not. Most recipients want the identificação, the rendimentos pages, bens e direitos, the resumo da declaração and the recibo de entrega. Each page of up to 250 words is $25, so send the pages your checklist names and leave out the blank schedules the program prints anyway. If you are not sure, send the whole file and we quote it page by page before you pay.
My income was below the limit and I never filed a DIRPF. What can I send?
Brazil stopped taking a declaration from people under the filing threshold in 2008, so there is no return to translate. Recipients usually accept the Informe de Rendimentos from your employer or bank, plus the Comprovante de Situação Cadastral no CPF from the Receita Federal site showing the CPF is regular. We translate both, and a short letter from you explaining why there is no return.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
