Vietnamese tax papers, and why most people have none

Most employees in Vietnam never file a return. The employer finalizes for them, so the proof of tax paid comes in a different form from a US 1040.

Quyết toán thay: when the employer files

An employee with a single employer signs a giấy ủy quyền quyết toán thuế and the company settles the year's thuế thu nhập cá nhân on its own return. What the employee can get is a chứng từ khấu trừ thuế TNCN, the withholding certificate showing gross income, thu nhập chịu thuế, giảm trừ gia cảnh for the person and each người phụ thuộc, and the tax withheld. Someone who files alone uses form 02/QTT-TNCN on the eTax portal, due by the end of the fourth month after the year. We translate the certificate or the return with the mã số thuế and the issuing tax office named as printed.

Businesses: TNDN, GTGT and thuế khoán

A company's year closes with the tờ khai quyết toán thuế thu nhập doanh nghiệp, form 03/TNDN, alongside the quarterly tờ khai thuế giá trị gia tăng. Both are filed electronically, and the proof a US reader trusts is the thông báo chấp nhận from the tax portal and the giấy nộp tiền vào ngân sách nhà nước showing payment. A household business holds only a thông báo thuế khoán from the ward tax team. We translate the return, the acceptance notice and the payment slip together so the amounts line up.

Into Vietnamese: proving US tax paid

The US and Vietnam signed a tax treaty in 2015 that never entered into force, so a Vietnamese resident with US income, or a Việt kiều who moved back, credits US tax paid against Vietnamese tax using the foreign tax documents themselves. The tax office asks for the US return, the IRS account transcript or a Form 1042-S, translated into Vietnamese. We translate those and keep IRS form names in English with a Vietnamese gloss, so the officer can see which document is which.

Who is asking for your Vietnamese tax return translation?

The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.

USCIS and the National Visa Center

Lenders and tax authorities

A mortgage lender or a tax office assessing foreign income accepts a certified translation of the return and its schedules. Ask whether they want a hard copy and add it at checkout.

Certified translations

Before you upload

Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Vietnamese tax return.

01

Send the filed return, not the draft

The recipient wants the version the tax office accepted, with its filing stamp, receipt number or online confirmation. Include the confirmation page if your return was filed electronically.

02

Include every schedule and attachment

The income summary on the first page refers to schedules behind it. A consulate or a lender reading the total will look for the pages that support it.

03

Give us the taxpayer name as the passport spells it

Taxpayer numbers, amounts and the currency are copied exactly as printed. Tell us the English spelling of each name on the return so it matches the rest of your file.

Vietnamese Tax Return FAQ

Most questions about pricing and turnaround can be answered faster by requesting a quote.

Request a Quote

USCIS or a lender asked for my Vietnamese tax returns but I only have pay slips. What now?
Ask your employer for a chứng từ khấu trừ thuế TNCN for each year, and ask the tax office for a xác nhận số thuế đã nộp, a confirmation of tax paid, which can be requested through the eTax Mobile app. Together with the hợp đồng lao động and twelve months of salary credits on your bank statement they show the income. We translate the set as one order so the names and the mã số thuế agree.
How is Vietnamese personal income tax structured, and does the translation explain it?
Vietnam taxes residents on worldwide income on a progressive scale with a personal deduction and a deduction for each registered dependent, the giảm trừ gia cảnh. The translation adds no explanations inside the document, but the figures it carries, thu nhập chịu thuế, thu nhập tính thuế and số thuế phải nộp, are translated with the full term so a US reader sees the difference between taxable income, assessable income after deductions and the tax due.
My newer documents show my CCCD number where the mã số thuế should be. Is that an error?
No. From July 2025 Vietnam uses the twelve-digit personal identification number on the căn cước as the personal tax code, so returns and withholding certificates from then on show that number where older ones show a ten-digit mã số thuế. A file that spans both periods will carry two different numbers for one person. We translate each as printed, and the translator can add a note explaining the switch so a US reviewer does not query it.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
