Hindi criminal record translation to English for a USCIS arrest disclosure, an asylum claim, a visa officer or a US attorney. In Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Haryana the police station writes the FIR in Hindi, and the magistrates' and sessions courts give their orders and judgments in Hindi, so a criminal file from these states has to be translated almost page by page.
USCIS asks anyone who has been arrested or charged for the record of what happened and how it ended. For a case in a Hindi-speaking state that record comes in several papers.
The FIR
The प्रथम सूचना रिपोर्ट is a printed form with the police station, the district, the FIR number and year, the informant's statement in the officer's hand, and the sections charged under the Indian Penal Code or, for offences registered since 1 July 2024, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The translation keeps the section numbers and the name of the code and does not swap in a US offence name. It says which code, because the same number means something different in each: section 303 is theft in the new code and was a murder provision in the old one.
Charge sheet, bail order, judgment
The आरोप पत्र lists the accused, the witnesses and the seized items, and ends the investigation. A जमानत आदेश from the sessions judge sets the bail terms. The निर्णय from the magistrate or the sessions court ends with the operative part: दोषमुक्त for acquitted, दोषसिद्ध for convicted, and the sentence. A case the police close for want of evidence ends with an अंतिम रिपोर्ट accepted by the magistrate, and that acceptance is the disposition to send USCIS. We translate the full judgment, not the operative part alone.
Hindi legal terms with no US equivalent
A राजीनामा is a compromise between the parties, and a compoundable offence settled that way ends with the court recording the compromise and acquitting the accused, an outcome US law does not have. उन्मोचन is a discharge before the charge was framed, which is not an acquittal. गैर-जमानती marks a non-bailable offence. We translate each term, keep the Hindi beside it for the lawyer, and never collapse a compromise, a discharge and an acquittal into one English word.
Who is asking for your Hindi criminal record translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS and the National Visa Center
Consular processing asks for police certificates with a complete English translation and a signed certification. No notarization is needed.
IRCC accepts a certified translation with the translator's affidavit. Order the certified translation and add notarization if your application guide asks for it.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Hindi criminal record.
01
Get the certificate first, then the translation
Most police certificates are valid for a few months. Have the certificate issued, then upload it, so the translation and the original are current together.
02
Check which authority the checklist names
A state letter, a federal letter and a court record are different documents. Read the consulate or USCIS checklist and send the one it asks for, or all of them.
03
Keep the QR code and verification number in the scan
Online certificates carry a QR code or a verification code. They are translated with the rest and are how a consulate confirms the document is genuine.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Hindi criminal record translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the criminal record is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
The case was settled by compromise. What should I translate?
The court order recording the compromise and acquitting you, with the FIR it refers to. A US officer may still treat the FIR as an arrest, so the order that ended the case is the page that matters, and its date, the court's name and the section under which the offence was compounded are translated word for word. Send a certified copy from the court, not the lawyer's draft.
I only have a copy of the FIR. Where do I get the rest?
Certified copies of the charge sheet, the orders and the judgment come from the district court, and a lawyer in India can apply for them on your behalf. The police station or the state's online FIR portal gives the FIR. The case number and its status also appear in English on the eCourts website, which helps a US officer match the Hindi papers to the case.
The case is still pending in India. What can I send?
Send the FIR, the charge sheet if one was filed, the bail order and the latest order sheet, the आदेश पत्रक, which records each hearing date and what happened at it. USCIS asks for the current status of a pending case, and the order sheet shows it. A lawyer's letter on the status can go in too, translated if it is in Hindi.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
