Hindi passport translation for the parts of an Indian passport that are not in English: the Hindi captions on the data page, the request page, an ECR or observation stamp, and the handwritten entries in older booklets. Most of an Indian passport is already in English, and we tell you plainly when a page does not need translating.
The Indian passport is a bilingual document. Every field label is printed in Hindi and English, and the entries themselves are in English, which decides how much there is to translate.
The data page
On the data page each caption appears twice, उपनाम and Surname, दिया गया नाम and Given Name(s), राष्ट्रीयता and Nationality, जारी करने का स्थान and Place of Issue, with the entry in English and repeated in the machine-readable zone. USCIS and most US offices read it without a translation. When a bank, a DMV or a foreign consulate insists on a certified English version of the whole page, we produce one that renders every Hindi caption and reproduces the English entries as printed.
ECR, observations and endorsements
The pages a reader cannot get past are the ones with Hindi text and no English twin. The request page from the President of India, भारत गणराज्य के राष्ट्रपति की ओर से, has an English version opposite it, but an Emigration Check Required stamp, a name change or spouse name endorsement on the observations page, an issuing authority seal and a handwritten correction may be in Hindi only. Those are the pages a US employer, a visa officer or a court asks to have translated, and they are usually one page at $25.
Older handwritten passports
Passports issued before machine printing have the holder's details typed or handwritten, and from the regional passport offices at Lucknow, Patna, Bhopal, Jaipur and Ghaziabad some entries and most stamps were in Hindi. People translate an old passport to prove a maiden name, a prior address or the date of a first entry into the US. We translate each page you send, stamps included, and mark any entry that cannot be read as illegible.
Who is asking for your Hindi passport translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
A foreign passport used as proof of identity is accepted with a certified translation of the data page. Digital delivery as a PDF is usually enough; ask for a hard copy if they want one.
A US passport sent abroad for a marriage, a residency permit or a property purchase often needs the translation notarized. Tell us the country in your order notes.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Hindi passport.
01
Send the data page and any page with a stamp
The photo page carries the name, number and dates. Visa pages, entry stamps and an amendment page matter too when the recipient is tracing travel history, so include them if the checklist asks.
02
Give us the spelling you use in English
The translation keeps the name as the passport prints it and notes the romanized spelling you use elsewhere. Say which at checkout so the recipient can match the two.
03
Scan it flat with the machine-readable lines in frame
The two lines of characters at the foot of the photo page are copied exactly as printed. A crooked or cropped photo hides them and slows the translator down.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Hindi passport translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the passport is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
Usually not. The biographic page is in English, and USCIS asks for translations only of documents that are not. Where an officer wants a specific page, it is the one with a Hindi-only stamp or endorsement, or an old passport whose entries are handwritten in Devanagari. Send us that page and we certify a translation of it; there is no reason to pay for pages that are already in English.
Can you translate the visa and immigration stamps in my passport?
Yes. Indian immigration stamps carry the airport and the date in English, but a stamp from a Gulf state may be in Arabic and is ordered as an Arabic translation. For a US file that needs an entry history, send every stamped page in order, and we translate the Hindi ones and reproduce the English ones so the dates line up.
Does the last page of my passport need translating?
Usually not, though applicants often send it, because it names the parents and the spouse. The last page gives the father's or legal guardian's name, the mother's name, the spouse's name, the address, the old passport number with its date and place of issue, and the file number. The captions are in Hindi and English and the entries are in English, so it reads like the data page.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
