Korean employee handbook translation for companies working across the two labor systems: a Korean 취업규칙 translated into English for US lawyers, auditors or an acquirer, and a US handbook translated into Korean for a subsidiary in Korea or for the Korean-speaking staff at a Korean-owned plant in Georgia, Alabama or Texas.
The Korean counterpart of the employee handbook has legal force, and a US handbook translated into Korean inherits that context whether the company intends it or not.
Filing, consent and what must be inside
Under the 근로기준법 an employer with ten or more workers must write a 취업규칙 covering hours, holidays, leave, wages, retirement, discipline and safety, and file it with the local 고용노동부 office. Changing it to the workers' disadvantage needs the consent of the union or a majority of the staff, and nothing in it may fall below the law or a 단체협약. A translated US handbook with at-will language and no filing is not a 취업규칙. Korean subsidiaries usually keep a filed 취업규칙 and a translated handbook side by side, and the translation has to make clear which one it is.
Terms a US HR reader will not recognize
연차유급휴가 is fifteen days of paid leave after a year, 퇴직금 is a lump sum of thirty days' wages for every year served, and 4대보험 is the four public insurances deducted from pay. 주 52시간 caps the week, 수습 is the probation period, 경조휴가 is leave for a family wedding or funeral, 생리휴가 is unpaid menstrual leave, and 직장 내 괴롭힘 is workplace harassment, banned since 2019. Dismissal needs 정당한 이유, which is the opposite of at-will. We give the English term, keep the Korean and add a short note the first time each appears.
Korean employers in the US and their 주재원
Samsung, Hyundai, LG and SK plants and their suppliers employ 주재원 sent from Korea alongside local hires, and the US handbook, the harassment policy and the safety rules go out in Korean as well as English. Most of these companies make the English version govern and say so on the first page of the Korean. In the other direction, when a Korean company's US subsidiary is sued or audited, counsel wants the parent's 취업규칙, 인사규정 and 징계 rules in English to show what policy the Korean managers were following.
Who is asking for your Korean employee handbook translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
Employers and HR departments
Employers give staff a handbook in a language they read, and keep a signed acknowledgment of the translated version on file. A certified translation shows the two versions say the same thing.
In a wage, discrimination or safety dispute, the handbook the employee received is an exhibit. A certified translation lets the agency or court compare it to the English original.
Handbooks and employment policies submitted with a work visa petition need a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Korean employee handbook.
01
Send the final version
A handbook is revised often. Upload the version HR has approved, with the acknowledgment page employees sign, so the translation matches what is on file.
02
Send the editable file if you have it
A Word file instead of a scan keeps the headings, tables and section numbers intact, so the translated handbook reads in the same order as the English one.
03
Tell us the terms your company uses
Job titles, department names and policy names often have a house translation already. List them in the order notes and the handbook follows them.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Korean employee handbook translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the employee handbook is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
If we translate our US handbook into Korean, does it have to be filed in Korea?
The translation is not a filing. If the Korean office has ten or more workers, Korean law wants a 취업규칙 on file regardless, and your Korean labor counsel decides whether the translated handbook becomes that document or sits beside it. We translate what you send and flag the clauses, such as at-will employment, that have no counterpart in Korean law so counsel can rewrite them.
Can you translate a Korean 취업규칙 into English for a lawsuit or an acquisition?
Yes. A 취업규칙 with its 인사규정, 징계규정 and 임금규정 annexes can run to dozens of pages of numbered articles, and the translation keeps the article numbering so a lawyer can cite 제23조 in either language. Each page of up to 250 words is $25, and the signed certification covers the whole set, which is what a court or a buyer's due diligence team expects.
Do you keep the same Korean term for the same policy through the whole handbook?
Yes. Before translating we fix a term list, so 연차 is always annual paid leave, 수습 is always probation and your job titles map the same way in every chapter. If your company already has a glossary or a previous Korean version, send it and we follow it, since staff notice when a new handbook renames a benefit they already have.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
