Korean contract translation of the 계약서 that proves a sale, a lease, a job or a business for USCIS, a US court, a lender or an insurer, and of US contracts into Korean for a Korean partner, employee or court. We handle the forms Korean realtors, employers and notaries actually use, not a generic contract.
A Korean contract follows conventions of its own for naming the parties, executing the pages and adding terms. A translation that drops them leaves a reader unsure who agreed to what.
갑 and 을, and the handwritten 특약사항
The parties are 갑 and 을, with 병 and 정 if there are more, and the names appear once in the opening and never again. We define each as Party A and Party B at the top, keep the Korean in brackets and use the same label throughout. The title tells you the form: 매매계약서 for a sale, 임대차계약서 for a lease, 근로계약서 for a job, 용역계약서 for services, 비밀유지계약서 for an NDA. A realtor's printed lease ends with 특약사항, special terms handwritten by the 공인중개사 that override the printed clauses, and those are translated word for word.
Seals, 간인 and the 공정증서
Korean contracts are sealed more often than signed. A property sale uses the registered 인감 and comes with each party's 인감증명서. Every page join carries a 간인, a seal impressed across two pages so none can be swapped, and counterpart copies carry a 계인. A 공정증서 is a contract drawn up by a 공증인, and for a money debt it can be enforced without a court judgment, which changes what a US lawyer should make of it. The translation labels each seal and 간인 and translates the notary page in full.
전세, 확정일자 and other terms with no US equivalent
On a 전세 or 월세 lease, the 확정일자 date stamp from the 주민센터, together with the tenant's 전입신고, gives the deposit priority if the landlord's property is sold off, and the translation explains the stamp instead of leaving it as a date. A sale is paid in 계약금, 중도금 and 잔금, and the printed clause that a seller who backs out returns double the 계약금 is the Civil Act rule, not a negotiated penalty. A 근로계약서 must state wages, hours, holidays and annual leave. We give the English term, keep the Korean and add a one-line note where the concept itself is foreign.
Who is asking for your Korean legal contract translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
Courts
A contract offered as evidence in a US court is filed with a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. Add notarization if the local rules ask for it.
Employment contracts and leases filed with a visa petition need a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Korean legal contract.
01
Send the signed version with every annex
Schedules, annexes and the signature page are part of the contract. Upload the executed copy so the translation shows the signatures, initials and dates.
02
Tell us the terms you already use
If your company translates a term a certain way, or a party name has an official English form, put it in the order notes. The translation follows your list.
03
Say where the translation is going
A contract going to a court, a lender or USCIS needs a complete translation with a signed certification. Say in the order notes who will read it.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Korean legal contract translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the legal contract is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
Who asks for a certified translation of a Korean contract in the US?
USCIS, for an E-2 or L-1 petition that rests on a Korean business, a lease or a supply agreement, and for an EB-5 source of funds file where the money came from a property sale or a returned 전세 deposit. US lenders and insurers want the same papers. US courts in a dispute with a Korean party want the governing contract and its amendments translated as filed evidence, with the certification attached.
We are signing with a Korean partner. Should the contract exist in both languages?
Usually. A Korean partner's board and a Korean employee both expect a Korean version, and a Korean court takes an English contract only with a Korean translation. Add a clause saying which language governs, since two versions without one can be argued as two contracts. We translate the English into Korean with the clause numbering intact.
My lease is a realtor's form with handwriting on it. How many pages is that?
A standard 부동산 임대차계약서 is usually one printed page plus the 중개대상물 확인·설명서 the realtor attaches, which describes the property and is sealed with the contract. A page of up to 250 words is $25, and dense forms with handwritten 특약사항 can run over that, so we count the words when you upload and tell you the price before you pay.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
