Portuguese contract translation for a visa petition, a US court, a bank or a counterparty in Brazil or Portugal. We translate a contrato de prestação de serviços, a contrato de locação, a compra e venda, a contrato social and an employment contract under the CLT into certified English, and US agreements into Portuguese for a Brazilian or Portuguese signatory.
Written for Portuguese (Brazil) legal contract records
Witness blocks, notarial stamps and civil-law terms
Brazilian contracts follow the Código Civil and carry formalities a US contract does not. A translation that drops them changes what the contract proves.
Instrumento particular, witnesses and reconhecimento de firma
A contract signed privately is an instrumento particular, as opposed to an escritura pública drawn up by a tabelião. Brazilian contracts end with a signature block for two testemunhas with their CPF numbers, because a private instrument signed by two witnesses is an enforceable title under article 784 of the Código de Processo Civil, and often with a reconhecimento de firma stamp from a cartório on each signature. Newer contracts are signed through gov.br or an ICP-Brasil certificate and carry a signature report as the last page. We translate the witness block, the notarial stamps and the electronic signature page as part of the contract.
Terms that do not map to US law
A sociedade limitada has sócios holding quotas, not shareholders holding shares, and its contrato social is both the articles and the operating agreement. A locação residencial under Law 8.245/1991 may be secured by a fiador, a caução or a seguro-fiança. Arras are earnest money with their own forfeiture rule, a cláusula penal is a liquidated penalty, and the foro de eleição fixes the court. We translate each with the nearest English term and keep the Portuguese in brackets on first use so a lawyer can look up the concept.
Portugal is not Brazil
A Portuguese contrato-promessa de compra e venda is the binding pre-sale agreement for property, with a sinal that a defaulting seller returns in double. A Portuguese employment contract cites the Código do Trabalho, not the CLT, and a company is a sociedade por quotas or a sociedade anónima, spelled without the Brazilian ô. The vocabulary differs enough that we match the translator to the country whose law the contract cites.
Who is asking for your Portuguese (Brazil) legal contract translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
Courts
A contract offered as evidence in a US court is filed with a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. Add notarization if the local rules ask for it.
Employment contracts and leases filed with a visa petition need a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Portuguese (Brazil) legal contract.
01
Send the signed version with every annex
Schedules, annexes and the signature page are part of the contract. Upload the executed copy so the translation shows the signatures, initials and dates.
02
Tell us the terms you already use
If your company translates a term a certain way, or a party name has an official English form, put it in the order notes. The translation follows your list.
03
Say where the translation is going
A contract going to a court, a lender or USCIS needs a complete translation with a signed certification. Say in the order notes who will read it.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Portuguese (Brazil) legal contract translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the legal contract is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
Which contracts does USCIS want translated for an E-2 or L-1 petition?
The ones that prove the investment or the relationship between the companies: the contrato social and its alterações, a contrato de compra e venda de quotas, the lease on the Brazilian premises, service agreements with major clients and the employment contract of the transferring manager. Each is translated in full with the signature pages and the Junta Comercial registration stamp, with our signed certification. A summary of a contract is not accepted.
Can a contract in English be used in Brazil, or does it need Portuguese?
Parties in Brazil may sign in English, but article 224 of the Código Civil says a foreign-language document produces legal effect in Brazil only once translated into Portuguese, and registration at a Registro de Títulos e Documentos or filing in court requires a tradução juramentada by a tradutor público, which we do not provide. Our Portuguese translation serves the Brazilian signatory, the company's lawyers and the negotiation itself; many companies sign a bilingual version with a clause saying which language controls.
Do you translate a contract signed electronically, with the signature report?
Yes. Contracts signed through gov.br, Clicksign, DocuSign or an ICP-Brasil certificate carry a final page listing each signer, the date, the IP address and a hash. That page is what a recipient uses to tie the signatures to the people, so it is translated with the contract, with the hashes and codes copied exactly. Send the PDF as downloaded rather than a print and rescan, which loses the embedded certificate.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
