Hindi death certificate translation to English for a widow's or widower's petition, proof that an earlier marriage ended, a life insurance or pension claim, a US probate file or a Social Security survivor claim. We translate the मृत्यु प्रमाण पत्र, the hospital's cause-of-death form, the cremation ground receipt and the legal heir certificate from any Hindi-speaking state.
What a Hindi death certificate does and does not say
The certificate proves that a death was registered. The cause, the heirs and the cremation sit on other papers, and a US recipient often wants one of those as well.
No cause of death on the certificate
The मृत्यु प्रमाण पत्र is Form 6 under the Registration of Births and Deaths Rules. It gives the name, sex and age of the deceased, the father's or husband's name, the date and place of death, the permanent address, the registration number and date and the registrar's seal, and nothing about why the person died. The cause is on Form 4, the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death the hospital sends to the registrar, or Form 4A for a death at home. A life insurer or an accident claim wants that form, so ask the hospital for a copy and we translate it alongside the certificate.
Age in years, and the word for the late
Hindi certificates give the age as a number of years, वर्ष, rather than a date of birth, and the name often carries स्व., short for स्वर्गीय, the late, in front of it, or पत्नी and पुत्र to say whose wife or son the person was. The translation writes the age as given, marks स्व. as an honorific meaning the late rather than part of the name, and keeps the relationship words, so an officer can match the deceased to the spouse named on your marriage certificate.
Cremation slip and legal heir certificate
In a town the death is often registered from the श्मशान घाट register: the cremation ground issues a receipt or certificate with the name, the date and the person who performed the last rites, and the family files it with the municipality. The legal heir certificate, वारिस प्रमाण पत्र, from the tehsildar lists the surviving spouse and children and is what an Indian bank, LIC and the land records office ask for. A US probate court or an insurer asks for it when an Indian account or policy is part of the estate. Each is translated as its own page.
Who is asking for your Hindi death certificate translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Hindi death certificate.
01
Send the civil record, not only the medical form
The registry act is the document recipients ask for. Add the doctor's certificate as a second file if an insurer or a court wants the cause of death.
02
Include the reverse and the stamps
Issue stamps, the registrar's signature and folio numbers often sit on the back or at the edge. Photograph both sides flat with the whole page in frame.
03
Give us the names as they appear elsewhere
Tell us the English spelling of the deceased and of the spouse or parents named on the record, so the translation matches the petition, policy or probate file it joins.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Hindi death certificate translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the death certificate is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
My father died in India and the death was never registered. What can be translated?
A death registered more than a year late needs a magistrate's order, and the certificate issued afterwards refers to it. Until then the family holds the cremation receipt, the hospital's death summary and sometimes a letter from the gram pradhan. We translate those, and an insurer or USCIS may take them as secondary evidence with an explanation, but the registered certificate is still the document to get.
Does USCIS accept the death certificate as proof that my earlier marriage ended?
Yes, when the certificate identifies the deceased in a way that matches the spouse on your marriage certificate. Hindi certificates do not always name the spouse, which is why the father's or husband's name field and the address matter. Where the certificate shows only the deceased's own name, add the marriage certificate and, if you have it, the legal heir certificate naming you, and we translate the set together so the names agree.
What is the difference between a legal heir certificate and a succession certificate?
The legal heir certificate is an administrative paper from the tehsildar listing the family. A succession certificate is an order of a civil court under the Indian Succession Act, 1925, that lets the heirs collect debts and securities such as bank deposits, and a bank may ask for one when the balance is large. In the Hindi-speaking districts the court writes it in Hindi, and we translate it as its own document.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
