Hindi divorce decree translation to English for USCIS, a county clerk issuing a marriage license, a family court or an immigration file abroad. We translate the judgment and the decree from the family courts and district courts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand and Haryana, where the trial courts write in Hindi.
Why an Indian divorce comes as two documents in Hindi
The trial courts of the Hindi-speaking states work in Hindi, so the judgment that ends a marriage is a Hindi document even when every form you filed in the US is in English.
निर्णय and डिक्री
An Indian court pronounces a judgment, निर्णय, and then draws up a decree, डिक्री or आज्ञप्ति, a separate sheet stating the operative order and the date it was passed. USCIS asks for the decree; a judgment alone, however long, is not it. The certified copy, प्रमाणित प्रतिलिपि, from the court's copying section carries the copyist's stamps with the date of application and the date of delivery, and we translate every stamp, because they are what prove the copy is official.
Section 13 or section 13B
A contested divorce is decreed under section 13 of the Hindu Marriage Act after evidence, and the judgment runs through the grounds in Hindi legal terms, क्रूरता for cruelty, परित्याग for desertion. A mutual consent divorce under section 13B is decided on two motions at least six months apart, unless the court waives the wait, and the judgment records both dates. The section number tells a reader which kind of divorce it was, and the translation keeps it with the Act's name.
Terms with no US equivalent
The decree may award भरण-पोषण or स्थायी निर्वाह, maintenance and permanent alimony under section 25, the return of स्त्रीधन, the wife's own property, and custody of a child. The parties are the याचिकाकर्ता and the विपक्षी or प्रत्यर्थी. We translate each term with the Hindi beside it the first time it appears, and where the judge switched to English to quote a statute or a precedent, those words are kept exactly as the court wrote them.
Who is asking for your Hindi divorce decree translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
A county clerk issuing a marriage license, or a family court, needs to see the prior marriage ended. A certified translation of the decree is accepted, notarized where the office asks.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Hindi divorce decree.
01
Send every page of the judgment
A decree is complete only with its reasoning, its resolutive points and the finality note or certificate. Pages missing from the middle leave the translation unable to show the divorce is final.
02
Add the registry act or the margin note
Where the divorce was recorded at a civil registry, the act or the note on the marriage record is often the page a clerk wants. Upload it with the judgment.
03
Tell us if only part was requested
If the recipient asked for the ruling alone, say so at checkout. Otherwise we translate the full document, which is what USCIS requires.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Hindi divorce decree translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the divorce decree is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
For USCIS, send both. The decree is the document that dissolves the marriage and the judgment explains it, and an officer who sees a two-page decree with no judgment often asks for the rest. A contested judgment can run fifteen or twenty pages, and a page is up to 250 words, so you see the page count when you upload and before you pay.
We divorced before a panchayat or by a mutual divorce deed on stamp paper. Is that a decree?
No. A notarized divorce agreement or a caste panchayat's decision does not dissolve a Hindu marriage under Indian law, only a court decree does, unless a recognized custom applies. USCIS, a county clerk and most courts will treat you as still married until a decree exists. We translate the deed if a lawyer asks for it, and label it an agreement rather than a decree so the reader is not misled.
Can I remarry in the US as soon as the decree is passed?
Section 15 of the Hindu Marriage Act lets either spouse remarry once no appeal lies against the decree, the time to appeal has run out with no appeal filed, or an appeal has been dismissed. If a county clerk or USCIS asks whether the decree is final, ask your lawyer in India for proof that no appeal was filed, or the appeal court's dismissal order. We translate whichever paper the court gives you.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
