Spanish diploma translation to English for a credential evaluation, a university application, a licensing board or an employer, and into Spanish for study or work abroad. We translate the título profesional, the título de bachiller, the Colombian diploma with its acta de grado and the Spanish título universitario oficial.
In most Spanish-speaking countries the diploma is one of two or three papers that together prove the degree, and an evaluator will ask for the set.
Mexico: título and cédula profesional
The título profesional is the degree certificate the university issues, a large sheet with the rector's signature and a registration stamp on the back. The cédula profesional is a separate card, or since 2018 an electronic record, from the Dirección General de Profesiones, and it is what licenses the holder to practice. A US licensing board may want both. Send the back of the título too; the registration numbers there are part of the record.
Colombia: diploma and acta de grado
A Colombian university issues the diploma and an acta de grado, the minutes of the graduation with the degree, the date and the libro and folio of the registration. Evaluators treat them as a pair, and each gets its own apostille. We translate both under one order and keep the libro, folio and acta numbers exactly as printed so they can be checked against the originals.
Degree names are translated, not converted
Licenciatura, Ingeniero, Técnico Superior Universitario, Maestría and the Spanish Grado and its predecessor the Licenciado stay in Spanish with a literal English rendering beside them. Licenciado en Derecho becomes Licentiate in Law, not Bachelor of Laws or JD. Deciding what a degree equals in the US is the evaluator's job, and evaluators ask that the translation not do it for them.
Who is asking for your Spanish diploma translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
Credential evaluators
WES, ECE and similar services ask for a word-for-word certified translation sent with the original. The degree name stays in the original language beside the English.
Physicians trained abroad send their diploma and transcript through ECFMG, which asks for an English translation of every document that is not in English.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Spanish diploma.
01
Scan the back of the diploma
Registration numbers, the ministry stamp and the book and folio entries are often printed on the reverse. Send both sides.
02
Send the companion document
A professional license, a graduation act or a transcript often goes with the diploma. Upload the set so the numbers and dates are translated consistently.
03
Tell us who the translation is for
An evaluator, a licensing board and a university each read the degree name differently. Say in the order notes where it is going.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Spanish diploma translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the diploma is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
Yes, as its own page. The physical cédula is a small card and the newer electronic cédula is a PDF with a QR code from the SEP; both carry the cédula number, the degree and the institution. A board that licenses nurses, engineers or physicians usually wants it next to the título, and the two are translated in one order so the names and numbers match.
Will the translation state the US equivalent of my degree?
No. The translation gives the degree name in English and keeps the Spanish beside it. Equivalence comes from a credential evaluator such as WES or ECE, or from the university or board you apply to, and they read the translation next to the original. Physicians go through ECFMG, which runs its own verification and asks for an English translation of every document that is not in English.
Can you translate a US diploma into Spanish for a job or a university abroad?
Yes. A Mexican employer, a Spanish university or a Colombian licensing body usually asks for an apostille on the US diploma from the state where the school sits, and some accept only a sworn translator from their own list. Check with the recipient, then order the translation into Spanish and add notarization if they want it.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
