Polish diploma translation to English for a credential evaluation, a graduate school, a licensing board, ECFMG or an employer, and from English into Polish for a nostryfikacja in Poland. We translate the dyplom ukończenia studiów for the licencjat, inżynier, magister and doktor, and the dyplom zawodowy a technikum graduate holds.
What a Polish dyplom says, and what the translation leaves to the evaluator
A Polish diploma names a tytuł zawodowy that has no exact US counterpart, and the evaluator, not the translator, decides what it equals.
Licencjat, inżynier, magister
The licencjat is the three-year first degree, the inżynier the three-and-a-half or four-year engineering one, and the magister the second degree, two years after either, or five years as a single jednolite studia magisterskie in law, medicine, pharmacy and psychology. A magister inżynier holds both titles. The translation keeps the Polish title and gives a literal rendering beside it, Master of Science in Engineering for magister inżynier, and never writes MBA or JD in its place.
The sheet itself and the odpis in English
The dyplom is a single sheet with the university seal, the rector's and dean's signatures, the diploma number and the date of the egzamin dyplomowy, the final examination. Since 2019 universities print it on a numbered form in a new layout, and on request, for a fee, they issue an odpis dyplomu w języku angielskim, an official English copy of the diploma itself. If you hold that odpis, send it with the Polish original; an evaluator wants both and may not need a translation of the diploma at all.
Doctors, nurses and the prawo wykonywania zawodu
A lekarz holds, besides the diploma, a prawo wykonywania zawodu issued by the okręgowa izba lekarska once the LEK exam is passed, and a nurse holds one from the okręgowa izba pielęgniarek i położnych. ECFMG and state medical boards want those translated next to the diploma, together with any zaświadczenie o odbyciu stażu, the internship certificate. ECFMG checks the diploma with the university directly, so the names and dates in the translation must match the Polish original to the letter.
Who is asking for your Polish diploma translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
Credential evaluators
WES, ECE and similar services ask for a word-for-word certified translation sent with the original. The degree name stays in the original language beside the English.
Physicians trained abroad send their diploma and transcript through ECFMG, which asks for an English translation of every document that is not in English.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Polish diploma.
01
Scan the back of the diploma
Registration numbers, the ministry stamp and the book and folio entries are often printed on the reverse. Send both sides.
02
Send the companion document
A professional license, a graduation act or a transcript often goes with the diploma. Upload the set so the numbers and dates are translated consistently.
03
Tell us who the translation is for
An evaluator, a licensing board and a university each read the degree name differently. Say in the order notes where it is going.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Polish diploma translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the diploma is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
I graduated before 2005 and have no suplement. What does the evaluator get?
The diploma plus a course record from somewhere else. Graduates before 2005 received no suplement, so the courses and grades are in the indeks, if you kept it, or in a wykaz ocen the university archive can print from the old student file on request. Older diplomas are a single sheet with a photograph and sometimes the thesis title. We translate the diploma and whichever course record you obtain, and evaluators generally accept the pair.
Will the translation say my magister is a master's degree?
It gives the title in Polish with a literal English rendering, so magister appears as Master and licencjat as Licentiate, with the field of study translated. Whether the degree equals a US master's or bachelor's is the finding of WES, ECE or the university you apply to, and a translation that pre-empts it can get the file sent back. The field of study is translated as written, so informatyka becomes computer science and prawo becomes law, with the Polish kept in brackets the first time.
What is a nostryfikacja, and can you translate my US diploma for it?
A nostryfikacja is the recognition of a foreign degree by a Polish university in the same field, needed for regulated work such as medicine or law in Poland. The application takes the apostilled US diploma, the transcript and Polish translations, and the university decides for a fee. We translate the file into Polish; universities often insist that the copy they keep come from a tłumacz przysięgły, so ask the dziekanat which version it will accept before ordering.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
