Tagalog Birth Certificate Translation

Tagalog birth certificate translation usually means the papers around a Philippine birth record, not the record itself. The PSA copy is printed in English. The late-registration affidavits, barangay certifications and handwritten statements attached to it are often in Filipino, and those are what we translate and certify for USCIS.

Where the Filipino is in a Philippine birth file

The Certificate of Live Birth on PSA security paper is an English form, and USCIS takes it as it is. The Filipino turns up in what a consular officer or the civil registrar asks for next.

Late registration affidavits

A birth recorded years after it happened is common in the provinces, and the PSA copy says so in its remarks. Officers treat a late registration as weak on its own and ask for more. The affidavit for delayed registration on the back of Municipal Form 102 is English, but the joint affidavit of two disinterested persons, neighbours or godparents who swear they knew of the birth, is often a Pinagsamang Sinumpaang Salaysay in Filipino. We translate it in full, including the jurat.

The father's acknowledgment

A child born outside marriage carries the mother's surname unless the father signed an Affidavit to Use the Surname of the Father under Republic Act 9255. The AUSF form and the PSA annotation recording it are English. The father's acknowledgment can instead be a private handwritten instrument, and fathers often write those in Filipino. That page ties the child to the petitioner, so it is translated word for word, crossed-out lines included.

Home births and the hilot

Many Filipinos born before the 1990s were delivered at home by a hilot, a traditional birth attendant, with no hospital record. The birth was reported on the hilot's word or a barangay certification, and those statements are usually short, handwritten and in Filipino. When an embassy asks how a birth was recorded, that certification is the answer, and we carry over the names and dates exactly as written.

Who is asking for your Tagalog birth certificate translation?

The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.

USCIS

USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.

USCIS translation requirements

US passports and the Department of State

The Department of State wants the translation notarized. Add notarization at checkout and we handle the rest.

Notarized translations

Consulates abroad

Consulates receive the translation of a US document, often with an apostille on the original. Tell us the consulate in your order notes.

Apostille service

Before you upload

Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Tagalog birth certificate.

01

Scan the whole page

Include the back, the margins and any marginal notes. A later correction or a recognition of paternity is often written in the margin, and the recipient needs to see it translated.

02

Give us the English spelling of each name

If your passport or green card spells a name without an accent, tell us at checkout. The translation keeps the names as the certificate writes them and notes the spelling you use.

03

Order the format the recipient asked for

If they want the long form, send the long form. We translate what you upload and cannot add parents' details that a short-form extract leaves out.

Request a Quote

Does USCIS need a translation of a PSA birth certificate?
No, not if every word on the copy is English, which is the case for a PSA certificate on security paper. USCIS asks for certified translations of foreign-language documents only. A remark, stamp or attached affidavit in Filipino does need translating, and the certification then covers it alongside a reproduction of the English page.
My copy is from the local civil registrar, not the PSA. Does that matter?
For the US it does. The State Department lists the PSA-issued certificate as the birth record for the Philippines, and a local civil registrar copy is a fallback. Both are English forms. If the PSA issues a negative certification because your record never reached Manila, that is English too, and the late-registration papers that follow are where Filipino appears.
My certificate has a legitimation annotation. What else do I send?
When parents marry after a child is born, the child is legitimated, and the PSA copy carries an English annotation saying so. Behind it is the parents' Affidavit of Legitimation filed with the local civil registrar. If that affidavit, or the acknowledgment it relies on, was sworn in Filipino, send it with the certificate so the officer can see why the surname or status changed.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
